Removing clicking from vinyl using audio cleaning lab 16 deluxe and Windows vista

After importing from vinyl, i am attempting to remove clicking and/or poping, using the cleaning function. Used the auto setting and applied to sound track. I do not see or hear a noticeable difference in the track. My first impression is that the cleaning function is not working. Should I see the noise spikes removed??

Hi,

Click and Pop from vinyl are two very different frequencies, so the pre-sets or auto settings are just a guideline.  You need to isolate the frequencies creating those two unwanted "noises" and remove them in two stages, not one.  I would focus on treating them as "noise removal" not click or pop removal.  You could try using the equalizer and if you are really lucky it might work, but if you want to try that approach, make sure that you turn or the "link bands" on the EQ and just go after the frequency ranges that you want to eliminate.

A far more effective way would be to use the noise reduction filter.  Ideally you will sample the "noise" and let the software remove it.  If your vinyl is seriously damaged, you may need to move to something a little more sophisticated and yes complex such as Audacity which is free.

You need to understand that "auto" functions on any software can only do so much and cannot get rid of every problem.  The Magix products do a much better job than most, but sometimes you need to go to the wave form and remove very specific frequencies or noise.

Good Luck,

George

Thanks George..Have had a bit more success with Magix but Audacity seems to do a much better job for me. Need to do a lot more playing yet, to make sure that I'm not loosing any quality from the original.  Thanks again..Gerry
