Recording Level too high as soon as signal received

As soon as the software receives the signal from the source from which I'm recording (a turntable)  the signal level is on overload.  Since my computer doesn't have a line in jack, I have been using a USB device (Audio Codec) and the last time I used it, it worked perfectly.  Since then I have changed computers.  Even with the levels set to the bottom on the mixer screen, it still goes to overload.  I even tried a different USB device with the same results. I've adjusted the microphone input level to minimum in the Sound popup window as well. This may be the first time I've used the software to record something since upgrading to Windows 7. Any assistance will be appreciated. I'm at a loss as to what is happening.  Thanks.

After several hours and confirmation that it wasn't the device or the patch cord, I found the solution:

Open control panel
Click on Sounds
Recording
Make USB Audio Codec  the default if it isn't already

Click on Microphone Properties
Click on level tab
Change level to db
Move slider to 10db
Click OK

It is important that the level be changed to db.  For some reason, just moving the slider when it is in volume mode does not work.

Hope this is helpful to anyone else experiencing the problem.  I found other posts on Google indicating they were having similar problems.
