Record two tracks simultaneously

Muka1 wrote on 6/19/2015, 6:59 PM

How do I record two tracks at the same time? When I select track 1 Record button it lights up but when I select track 2, track 1 goes out and track 2 lights up. I am using MMM 2015 Premium on a Win7 Workstation. I am using Alesis IO2 Express USB Recording Interface.

Hi,

You cannot record to more than one track at a time with Music Maker. For this you would need Music Studio or Samplitude Music Studio, depending on how many tracks you need to record to simultaneously, plus many other factors.

With your Alesis, you only need to record to one track. Remember that you have 2 channels per track, left and right, so you can plug in 2 mics or a mic and a guitar and record them.. Your interface will record to only one track. Once done, you can separate the channels on to separate tracks.

If you also want to record from a piano keyboard connected to another USB port at the same time, you can't do it with Music Maker.

If you are new to Music Maker, you should take a look at my tutorial.

Thanks for replying. I was looking at your tutorial and the first thing says to download all add ons with my MMM 2015 Premium. I do not see that screen to download. How can I tell if I have all the add ons downloaded?

Also you mention to record Left and right channelsand then later separate them. Can you please tell me how do I separate them? Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Hi,

If you bought the boxed version, then everything was probably included. If you bought the on-line version directly from Magix, then you need to download the rest. Look under the Help button in the top menu, Update program/Upgrade functions, Download free synthesizer and sound packages. I am assuming that you purchased the program. This might not be available in the trial version.

To separate left and right channels, right-click the object, Additional functions, Convert stereo into two mono objects (Shift+Z).

Hi

. . . . To separate left and right channels, right-click the object, Additional functions, Convert stereo into two mono objects (Shift+Z). . . . .

And if you want to position the instruments/ vocals on the sound stage instead of having both in the centre,  you can now use the  Balance slider on the Stereo Enhancer (Z key)  to adjust the position on the audio stage.

Hi Browi2,

When I am recording from my Alesis i02 Express to a single track, I I am only getting a single mono chanel recording although I have the switch set to Sterio. So when I'm playing back the voice only comes out the a single speaker and not from both speakers. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,

As we said, you can only record to 1 track at a time; 1 track has 2 channels, left and right. To record in stereo, meaning left and right channels, you have to have 2 instruments or microphones plugged in, one on the left, the other on the right. If you are recording from only 1 mic, then you are not recording in stereo, you are recording in mono, thus you have to set everything for recording in mono, including on the recording parameters screen.

If you have already recorded using 1 instrument (mono) with everything set for stereo, then of course you will only hear the sound out of the associated left or right speaker, not both. Do exactly as I said to separate the channels onto separate mono tracks, then delete the track that has no sound.
