Reading a HDP format

MonsterCarp wrote on 12/12/2024, 11:20 AM

I have just edited an MP4 file and saved it as a MP4 file, or so I thought. It appears to me to now be a MP4.HDP file that nothing can seemingly open. Can anybody suggest how I can convert this file into something that can be readily opened by friends and family?

Hi

. . . . MP4.HDP file . . . .

The .HDP is one of 2 support files, the other is the .H0 file, created by the program when you import a video clip.

. . . . saved it as a MP4 file . . . .

Do you mean saved or exported, if saved then you have probably just saved the project, this will not result in a video file.

If you exported the timeline (movie) as a MP4 file using one of the MP4 presets then the file should be in the folder you set in the export settings, if you did not set a folder than the MP4 should be in the export folder location as set in the Program Settings, Folder tab, Export option.

I exported the file from Magix Movie Studio 2023. The video was imported as an MP4 file cropped and rotated and then exported as a MP4. I ended up with a MP4.HDP file that a lot of people are asking about on-line as there doesn't seem to be any easy was of viewing this format. The MP4.HDP file was exported to the original folder the MP4 file was stored in.

Hi

. . . . The MP4.HDP file was exported to the original folder the MP4 file was stored in. . . . .

As I commented previously the .HDP file, and the .H0 file if present, is/are created when you add/import a video clip to the timeline, it is not created when you export to a MP4 file - see vvideo below, this also shows the .H0 file is created - this is the audio waveform representation you would see on the audio track.

. . . . I exported the file from Magix Movie Studio 2023.. . . .

To which folder, and what name did you give for the file?

The exported file .MP4 will be located as I mentioned previously, with the filename you provided.

Hi.

The H0 and HDP files do not contain any audio of video in them. They are instruction sets telling the program how to use that clip at that point on the timeline for such an amount of time and show the corresponding frames / waveforms contained in the actual video or audio files you have chosen to use at those points within the project's timeline.

As such H0 and HDP files are only of any use within the editor itself and even then only if the original source files exist in the folder destination they were in at the time the project was created.

That's a very rough and probably a bit wrong of an over simplified explanation, but basically the editor is non destructive to the original files themselves and the original video and audio files need to be kept or you will have an empty project devoid of any useful data to produce an edited render of a proper MP4 or similar video file, which will be many times larger once rendered. This is why editors are termed 'Non Destructive'. The programs do not attempt to alter the original source files at all.

Ray.

It appears to me to now be a MP4.HDP file that nothing can seemingly open.

What is the name of your source file?

I suspect what you're seeing is the Magix-generated HDP file of your original MP4, which has the name "MP4".

Example: I have an MP4 video named soccer1.MP4.

When you bring it onto the timeline, Magix automatically creates two support files, an HDP and an HO. These files will be named soccer1.HDP and soccer1.HO. You can see them in the folder containing the soccer1.MP4 file.

In your case, I think you're seeing the HDP created from your source file.

As pointed out above, your exported MP4 will be in the folder designated in the "File name and storage location" box on the Export screen. This won't necessarily be the folder that contains your source file.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
