ProRes support?

John-Brown/browj

On the Vegas forum you wrote about VPX:

"Native ProRes support Video Pro X now fully supports ProRes video codecs for Apple. Directly integrate ProRes files into your Windows system."

Can you (or someone) confirm this?

I'm interpreting "now fully supports" to mean I could IMPORT a ProRes video into VPX, EDIT it within VPX, and EXPORT it as ProRes out from VPX. However, I don't see it on the Export Menu as an option. And it's not listed on the Update History page (which goes back to 2015).

Was this a mistake, or what am I missing?

Okay, I read the threads... So, I think I'm understanding 3 things:

1. ProRes codec files are transmitted in an .mov container. Which requires Quicktime to be installed.

I had thought that Quicktime was considered officially incompatible with Windows for several years now. Has this changed?

2. Video Pro X12, (i.e. v.18) has removed Apple licensing support, which means it not longer can work with ProRes files in an .mov container.

3. This recent exclusion applies to all Magix products, including Vegas Pro.

So, if any of us went back a version, we might regain .mov/prores compatibility?

Hi

John CB - where did you get this quote from and when?

My take on ProRes:-

  1.  ProRes codec files are transmitted in an .mov container. Which requires Quicktime to be installed

Yes.

Quicktime for Windows stopped being developed for Windows some years back and as such the last version is considered to be a security vulnerability. It still works in VPX for import for preview (but not with all formats and and codecs), but .mov for export is unavailable as a format template.

2. VPX up to V18.0.1.85 could import and export most Prores files but the export codec was renamed as Intermediate codec with all the ProRes formats available. Magix withdrew that export option in V18.0.1.89.

I did not update to the last Patch so I still have that option.

3. Certainly to VPX and MEP.

So, if any of us went back a version, we might regain .mov/prores compatibility?

Maybe, but it might be a case similar to the Dolby Digital codec where it might not appear with a clean install.

Peter

Could you please put a link to my quote? I took a look through some of my posts on the Vegas forum but didn't find it. I do recall posting it as a copy/paste from the Magix.com site for VPX. When, I don't recall.

Hi,

The ProRes codec is no longer supported by VPX since update 18.0.1.89 -> Removed: Import / export files via "MAGIX Intermediate codec".

MAGIX intermediate was an unofficial implementation of Apple ProRes.

There is no replacement solution on VPX.

Regards.

DéDé.

But still used in Vegas Pro 18 with parts from Apple.

Hi DéDé

. . . . But still used in Vegas Pro 18 with parts from Apple . . . .

Very true as we do know they were being negotiated back in July 2020 and, presumably, are now available for Vegas.

However we do not know what the Magix licensing arrangements with Apple are for VPX.

To misuse a famous quote, it may be a case of 'What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas' 😁

John, so sorry... I just spent a half hour or so looking in vain on the Vegas forum. You had a couple similar posts there comparing VPX and Vegas. So helpful!

Actually, the quote is here on the Video (maybe MEP) forum:

https://www.magix.info/us/forum/question-about-annual-updates-a-feature--1198267/#ca1357857

See part-way down the page you list a thorough feature superset of VPX compared to MEP:

"17. Supports all standard video formats, including AVCHD (Progressive), NXCAM, ProRes, XAVC S, XDCAM or HEVC/H.265 and also professional formats such as AVC-Intra and DVCPRO. The open Timeline in this video editing program allows for easy import and editing of different formats without the need to convert them beforehand.

18. Native ProRes support Video Pro X now fully supports ProRes video codecs for Apple. Directly integrate ProRes files into your Windows system."

Hi

The quote you are referring to is over 3 years old, since then there have been changes in the licensing of codecs.

Known changes are the Apple Prores video codec and the Dolby AC3 Surround Sound encoder, both of which are currently not supported.
