If the second monitor is connected to the motherboards HDMI output and showing an image then the Intel GPU is active.

Have you got a copy of the Intel Graphics Command Center? You can adjust for the monitor from there.

Check in the MEP/VPX program Device Options/Display options - if the iGPU is there it is on, if not you turn it on in the BIOS.

Did they fix the HDD?

Does the HDD appear in Device Manager or Disk Manager?

Have you had a look inside, if they have not put a security seal on the case? The drive may not be plugged in - power and/or SATA connector.

The HDD was nowhere to be found. As it turned out, it wasn't plugged in to the power, nor had they downloaded and installed the drivers.

The only thing that I haven't figured out is the remote for the fancy lights on the fans. I asked to check but wasn't at the store when the tech brought the computer back, and I didn't ask. No big deal.

Where to start?

I recall when I set up my laptop 5 years ago that I installed some older versions of MEP and VPX just to get some of the plugins, like Knoll Light Factory. As for more recent ones - New Blue and Hitfilm, do I need to install the version of the main program or will I get them by logging in to their respective interfaces?

Of those 2 Bitdefender - I would avoid Norton and McAfee. My preferences are Avast followed by Windows Defender 😱.

Avast is relatively lightweight in terms of resources and is not so invasive as other AV's, and Defender has improved considerably as it has matured and is rated quite highly.

When I rebuilt my PC, and got the new laptop, I elected to install the minimum number of programs, variants and 3rd party effects.

Others programs that I had for reference, eg older versions of MEP and trial programs, are now going into Virtual machines when possible.

Check your accounts with the appropriate software supplier - some have the downloads, for the versions you had, available. I had issues with Red Knoll Light Factory and MEP 2020/21 before, so did not install it after, the rebuild.

Hi guys,

Just an update.

Thanks for the suggestions for the anti-virus. I went with BitDefender.

Setting up the new computer is a nightmare. Too many programs.

I moved the folders My documents, Video, Pictures etc. to the second drive installed in the computer, renamed as B.

Also, the computer guy created a user account, ClientSIC and I started installing things with that. MS kept telling me that I should use my MS account to log in. So I did. I am still stuck with ClientSIC for AppData with no apparent way to change this. I have asked on the MS forum.

Under Settings, Update & Security, there is a message indicating that this PC doesn't currently meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11... Yeah, sure. I presume that means that TPM is not turned or something.

When I installed VPX12, it was a mess. I managed to do a reset. The hamburger menus for the 2 monitors would not open. All seems to have been resolved after a reboot. However, the username thing is still a problem as it shows up in the Media Pool.

I received the new LG monitor. I can't say that I am amazed. The comments about this being overkill were spot on, but at least the colours are better than the old monitor, and the dimensions are better as the old one has a very thick frame. I'll use it as a third monitor once I find one of my longer HDMI cables buried in a box somewhere in the basement.

I wonder if anyone has told hard drive manufacturers (Western Digital) that the HDD cables supplied are far too short. A desktop computer does not go on the desk, it goes under it. The HDD go on the desk. I'll have to construct something under the desk for the hard drives.

Sorry I can't help much as I'm still running Win 10.

My motherboard did not come with a TMP chip and had to seek out the ASUS add-on one for my board. Glad I got the first one I found on eBay as ASUS has stopped producing that TMP module. I hadn't turned it on nor planned to until I went to Win 11. So I went to the Windows security settings you pointed to and to my surprise is is on and working within Win !0. So I guess you are correct but I would have thought the default for a new motherboard would be on, not off.

As far as using an old HDMI cable for 4K, maybe you should read this.

My enormous tower case is on my desktop not under it (although it is a very large desk) and external HDDs sit on the top of the case. There is normally less dust at desk height than on the floor. I suppose it depends on where your case fans are situated. I find it more convenient for working on if needed and for turning on and off. It weighs more than I can comfortably lift and is the second heaviest thing in my workroom with the 15" sub bass speaker coming in first.

That is an imposition, IMO, you should at least have the option to use a local account with out crippling Windows 11 for updates.

Personally I will ensure that One Drive and as much as possible of the 'extraware' is disabled/crippled/consigned to the dustbin never to be seen again, whichever is greatest opportunity to get rid of it. This has been a big complaint of 11.

I assume you mean USB3 external drives - yes the cables are short, however, the longer the cable the lower the potential transfers speeds due to wire capacitance coupling giving rise to lower signal levels degrading the signal over longer distances. USB 2 max distance is ~ 5m (~ 16.5ft), USB3 is ~ 1m ( ~ 3.25 ft)

Personally I have all my USB3 backup drives connected to a 7 port powered USB3 hub which has a longer cable, my smaller WD drives sit on top of the computer plugged in to the front USB3 socket when I transfer projects to them for use in the laptop when mobile.

The HDMI cable is for the old 27in. Full HD monitor. The 4K monitor uses the Display 1.4 cable.

I just don't want the local user account to be ClientSIC.

I use OneDrive but it is only limited to certain files that I want access to from both computers. I do, however, backup up some files but directly on the cloud, not synchronized - only available by opening OneDrive through the internet interface.

I had been using my 7 port hub but I may not use it with the new computer. Often, when I plug in or unplug something, the hub turns off. Something is wrong with the power connection. Most annoying.

If ClientSIC is the local admin account you can change it to your name:-

Open the Control Panel.

Under the User Accounts, click Change account type

Select the local account

Click Change the account name

Confirm the new account name.

I just want to thank you for inspiring me to try updating my bios.

I never had the nerve before but I have just updated it to the latest version. It was because of your comment on the TPM problem and I was looking to see if the motherboard needed a separate module like mine did. I still can't find that information but while I was there I looked for updates for mine and realized I had the original bios for the board. I have no idea what the new bios difference is or what benefit it will be but using the ASUS easy bios tool it was indeed easy to do. A bit scary when it rebooted and told me to change my raid settings which I ignored and then rebooted again but already I see an improvement to my two monitors. The blacks are much blacker. Contrast is better. Why I have no idea.

I think I can see what is happening - what name appears on the computer login screen?

If you can create a new local account and assign it to be an Administrator, login with that, account, can you access access the programs and all your project files, note if the files are in the C:\Users\ClientSIC\Documents you should be able to access them and move them if you wish.

I log in with a PIN because it's through MS. The account name is my email address. As soon as I accepted to do that, the way to log in changed. Even OneDrive local showed up under ClientSIC.

I think only the Pro and Enterprise versions gives full control over OneDrive.

There's few things worse than having to cope with multiple user accounts on a Windows computer.

My suggestion: wipe it and start again, without the help of those wallys in the shop.

Take an image of your C drive as it is now so you can go back, then get a Win 10 disk/USB (the shop should have provided one for you) and reinstall Windows, using only your Microsoft account, and be done with it.

OneDrive can be disconnected and disabled in the Home edition - for the consumer you cannot uninstall it from Home or Pro, it is part of Windows, the Enterprise edition maybe.

@browj2 That is what I thought had happened, the mode of login changing to the Sign In Client which signs you in to OneDrive at the same time rather than having a second step logging in to OneDrive.

With a Local Account you only have a local OneDrive folder which does will not sync until you sign in on the PC with your Microsoft account.

No, it can't be uninstalled in the Enterprise version either. Nor Catarna or whatever it's called. They can be thoroughly disabled though. I used to get the notification that one app was always using the microphone but no notification which app. Since updating the bios though I haven't had that and it seems to have reset my pc's audio controls to a better configuration. They do not reset do a different default any more but keep to my alterations. I have no idea why that happened.

Thanks for the definition of SIC; I had no idea, thought it was a French acronym from the vendor.

I'm still stumped as to what to do to get ClientSIC to be my name, short of taking Alwyn's advice and reinstalling W10 (which I really don't want to do). I'm about to accept the inevitable.

On my old machine with W10 Home, I was able to redirect the location of the local OneDrive to an external HDD and limit it to only files that I dragged into that folder system.

On the new computer, I have OneDrive under C:\Users\ClientSIC\OneDrive and another OneDrive - Personal that shows with the cloud icon in Windows Explorer.

Checking the online OneDrive, it is identical to what shows under ClientSIC. This is somewhat disconcerting as I was sure that I had folders that were not synched, like a bunch of scanned photos. Maybe I am confusing this with Box, which I haven't yet installed on this new computer.
