Program locking up.

Can anyone here help - Magix won't unless i pay them!

I have recently reinstalled the Magix Edit Pro 17 Plus and regardles of what i do, it keeps crashing out. It locks up at 90% when loading a project. It locked up after 2 hours work and had not saved. Have tried a full reinstall just in case (again) and now it locks up when importing audio files.

I have ensured it is up dated to version 10.0.12.2. Codecs etc are installed etc.

My system currently running Vista Ultimate (64)  with service pack 2 and I have turned off SLI, lowered config and so forth.

This is so fraustrating as the software is not that cheap and i have never been able to get it working properly or get support from Magix. THey done advertise the 365 days support. Might investigate the legality of this as the expected life span of the sofware must be more than 1 year. Only using it now as cannot afford and alternative so any assistance from fellow users would be greatly appreciated.

try installing SP3.

Hi And thanks. Not sure what you installed but there has never been a service pack 3 released for vista.

I appreciate the help but experience has taught me to only download windows updates via the official site.

Any other ideas anyone?

Hi,

I'm not clear about when it's crashing. Is it doing so after a PC reboot and an empty new project started? Or with specific projects?

"It locks up at 90% when loading a project." Any project? No messages?

"It locked up after 2 hours work..." Do you mean while you were working on it in the timeline it stopped responding?

"...and had not saved." You had not saved it in 2 hours? Or MEP? Had MEP been writing backup .MV_ files as specified in Program settings > System > Save project automatically ?

Have you done a reset with File > Settings > Reset program settings to default?

Has this only started since you re-installed? In which case are you sure the re-installation wasn't flawed or interrrupted in some way? Are all your files in the usual folders? In my case (using XP) most of them are here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MAGIX\Movie_Edit_Pro_17_Plus

Hi Terry & thanks for the help.

Hopefully this will clarify my issues "It locks up at 90% when loading a project." = I saved a project (.mpv) worked on it (issue free) for about an hour. Had to go out so saved before closing down. When i tried to re-open, the load '%' pop up form ran through and got stuck at 90% (no errors) - by stuck I mean it froze. At first i assumed it was busy but after 15 mins it was aparent it had failed. Only way out was to carry out forced close from task manager. this occurred many times.

After biting the bullet i started the project again (it is only jpegs & 1 audio track). "It locked up after 2 hours work..." Yes it locked / crashed while woring in timeline. I added a new 3D title and it froze again. no way i could save etc & either the auto save was not functioning or it is not saving to the set folder. I normally save regularly to avoid loss of work but what can i say :(

I had initially set program up to run from another drive as my SSD C drive is not huge so thought it may be this causing the crash (stalling). I did a full uninstall including removing any Magix file from all drives so reinstall was clean.

The reinstall was done using complete default settings. An update was performed using program defaults and video plugins installed to default locations. No other programs were running (except Norton which i refuse to turn off regardless of where i download from or what i install - if there are issues these should be dealt with by patches etc)

On reinstall, create new project, try to open audio file and the system freezes. Try to open jpg and system freezes. only option is again to force close. Again no error messages are seen.

My PC is way above the spec required to run this software and i am really dissapointed i cannot get it working. it seems to be exactly what i want, i just cant keep it open long enough to really learn how to use it.

Hi. (Not Terry but ...)

I've quite deliberately copied part of your answer above. Unfortunately, Norton is not unknown for causing problems on install of programs. I fully understand why you would not want to turn it off whilst installing but I don't think that "issues... should be dealt with by patches etc." is really the solution! Software manufacturers cannot be responsible for how a user's computer may or may not react to its software. The advice is always to turn off any other programs running at the time of installation, especially AntiVirus or other "security" software. My own experience of Norton several years ago is that it can be a "dangerous" program; in my case on two occasions, whilst it was officially updating itself, it wrote off my Registry, with the result I had to completely reinstall Windows from scratch!

So, yes, I am NOT a Norton lover, but I still think you would be well-advised to completely uninstall, using something like Revo Uninstaller, which will search your entire computer for any files related to MEP and allow you to remove them. Then reinstall, with Norton "turned off/disabled" or whatever (assuming you have the installation DVD you can safely disconnect from the internet and so completely avoid any nasties infecting your computer). Once the initial install is finished I would check that MEP runs "normally", then re-enable Norton, reconnect to the Internet and download any program updates.

Hi

. . . . I had initially set program up to run from another drive as my SSD C drive is not huge so thought it may be this causing the crash (stalling) . . . .

Did you set the filepaths to point to the second hard drive or did you leave them at the defaults?

If left at there defaults I would suspect your SSD drive got close to being full that MEP could not continue.

Is the second drive internal to the computer or an external USB?

If it is a USB drive then you may have suffered a temprorary disconnection of the drive - this does happen sometimes - which would corrupt the project.

Are all the images and sound files on the second drive?

??? - the version you have was released in Nov 2010 and you are currently 2 versions behind the current release. No software company will provide free support for older versions of a product for an unlimited time.

Hi John. Yes all filepaths were set to the appropriate drive & all drives are well within advised free space limits and none of my drives are usb and yes the files being used were on the other drive. It appears however that MEP creates a copy locally (have just checked the Magix documents folder) so assumedly the program will use these files whilst processing.

In regards to the release date, i only purchased my copy - from a major retailer - a little over 18 months ago, no where near the release date. I have plenty of other software that is far older than even nov 2010 that is supported with no issue by the software company - and certainly no attempt to get money out of me. I know that Magix cannot be held responsible for retailers or operating environments. Although this is off topic, had there been a clear warning on the box that support after a year was going to cost me, i would not have made the purchase in the first place. In regards to versions i have many, many items in my house that have new versions issued on a daily basis, i do not however, automatically go out to purchase them just because they exist. It is not too much to expect the life span of a program to be more than one year. I still for example use a laptop with XP which is still supported even though it was first released in 2001.

Hi Jeff & thanks. I really don't think that Norton is the issue (although i am aware of its potential). My point in regards to patches are generally used to resolve any problems. I already use an unistaller so a confident that all the associated files have been removed prior to re-install. Many thanks

Many thanks to both for trying to assist.

Just an update.

I decided to look at the processes running when the lock up occurred. There was one which was from a photo editing suite that when stopped (just an update process i believe) remedied the locking up. Have now been able to create & save a project.

Many thanks again to those who tried to assist
