Program Freezes for 20 Seconds Before Attempting Playback

Tom-Elmer wrote on 10/29/2022, 5:58 PM

Good afternoon,

I'm having what is becoming a very cumbersome issue when attempting playback.

I downloaded Magix Movie Studio 2023 Platinum this morning and each time when attempting playback, the program freezes for about 20 seconds before playback begins. I've never had this issue before with any version of Magix and it is becoming very frustrating. It doesn't seem to matter which format the raw video is, and after searching the Internet and Forum, I have yet to find a workable solution.

I have tried going to my device manager and making sure drivers have been updated. My device is a Dell laptop, Inspiron 77062n1, NVIDIA, Intel CORE 17 (stickers next to my touchpad).

If needed:

If anyone can point me in the right direction about what to do, that would be very much appreciated. Let me know if more information is needed.

Hi Tom and welcome to the user to user forums.

It's early morning here 😀

Try not using the Intel GPU as it will be using motherboard ram which is slow compared to the nvidia vram.

Try switching to all those settings shown to nvidia MX350 if that is possible. Next make sure you are using the Wave driver for sound and not direct X. If you are already on the sound wave driver make sure you do not have more than 2 buffers set to begin with.

See if those changes helps.

Hi

. . . . Try switching to all those settings shown to Nvidia MX350 . . . .

Unfortunately that is not going to help - the MX350 does not support NVENC which is required for Hardware acceleration, it does support DirectX12 so may be used for rendering of some effects.

Are the Intel Iris XE graphics drivers up to date? The latest version is: 31.0.1.2114

What is the resolution and format of the video clips you are importing? Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

How much RAM is in the laptop?

Hi John.

@Tom-Elmer specs say 16GB of ram. What are Dell up to matching that graphics cards to that processor?

Rhetorical question. Gaming.

Hi Ray

. . . . Rhetorical question. Gaming. . . . .

I would not say it is aimed at the gaming market as the MX350 is a mobile 'entry level' GPU with limitations depending on the game.

It is, IMO, more aimed at the Business user having large touch screen, slim design low weight and can be used as a tablet or laptop.

At least the Iris XE iGPU was not disabled so may be usable depending on the source video format(s) and the drivers being up to date.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, the issue is still persisting.

I've tried changing the settings under "Hardware Acceleration" in the options tab, as well as the Wave Driver/Direct X settings.

I did go to my Device Manager to update the XeGraphics, whereupon the pop said my drivers were up-to-date. Regardless, I also tried to download .2114 and restart. Nothing changed in Magix and my graphic driver still reads as follows:

I also included the NVIDIA driver just in case.

The majority what I edit is 4k, even then I don't add a lot of effects or do a lot more than trimming, adjusting sharpness, exposure, etc... and putting objects together. That being said, the issue still persists in resolutions lower than 4k. Further, I've tried ungrouping the video and sound files and deleting the video, still running the sound. The issue is still there. I'm sure I have enough space on my hard drive, since just a shade over half is full. Give all of this, like I said before, I never had this issue.

Any other ideas?

@Tom-Elmer

Hi Tom.

Not many I'm afraid.

You have to go to the Intel website and check for drivers yourself. Often Microsoft will report drivers are up-to-date when they are not. If they are up-to-date, then you are probably stuck as the nvidia MX350 card (according to @johnebaker who has much better knowledge of nvidia card capabilities than myself) has a die that has some sections of the die disabled and although the release date was 2020, the die itself is a capped nvidia 1050ti that was introduced in 2016. (that took a bit of looking up) Although the Xe can encode 4K video it will be painfully slow without a better supporting nvidia card once it has to do more than hard cuts.

I have to agree with John on this one, I was pinning my hopes on the nvidia card being newer as the release date said 2020.

If there are other options in the program settings in the Import, Processing, and Export boxes, you could try letting the CPU handle Importing and Processing and see if anything improves.

What program version did you use before?

Ray.

Hi

. . . .  I also tried to download .2114 and restart . . . .

My apologies, for some reason I read your Windows as being 10, the number I gave you is the Windows 10 version of the combined 10 / 11 driver which is 31.0.1.3790 for Windows 11 - you are up to date.

,. . . . Any other ideas? . . . .

The MX350 drivers are out of date - the latest version number is 526.47 (31.0.105.2647) here - I never trust Windows to tell me the drivers are up to date, it only knows what the manufacturer has supplied to Microsoft.

. . . . The majority what I edit is 4k . . . .

Can you analyse one of the clips with MediaInfo and post the data please.

4K video is going to put a large load on the laptop and it may struggle for playing back the timeline given the effects you are adding which will be depending upon the CPU rather than the GPU.

You can mitigate some of this by using the following:

  • Automatically create proxy files in the project settings - this will create lower resolution versions which are used for previewing of the timeline - the downside is they take up mor disc space, however once the project is finished and exported or disc created, they can be deleted - they will be recreated if you need to go back to that project.

  • The Lightning symbol bottom right of the Preview monitor - it will be blue when on, this further reduces the load for playback of the timeline.

  • Render sections (range) of the timeline for playback by setting In - Out points (red arrow in image below) and using the Render button top left of the timeline pane (yellow arrow).
The bar under the range will turn green when rendered (white arrow) and it you make changes to that section of the timeline it will turn red to indicate that it needs re-rendering.

I sincerely hope I'm not out of luck, as I spent $70 for the new version and it doesn't work as well as the older one I had. Like I said, I never had this issue before with 4k or anything else. If that's the case, I would want a refund.

For what it's worth, I can move the timeline through the video with no problem, import with no issue, and once playback does begin, there are no further issues...jumps, freezes, etc... The issue is only when I press play.

Like your suggestions said, I've already tried the lightning bolt and the proxy files to no avail. Even in low resolution videos (like 720), there is still a 20 second lag time/freeze before playback.

Is this what you want to see?

Well...as I say with a slight grin of embarrassment...

I found that Windows had an update that wasn't yet on my computer. The yellow dot was not next to the restart option in the Start menu, so I didn't realize that one was available until I went to "Windows Update" in my control screen.

Regardless, and even more miraculously, Movie Studio now works as it should.

Thank you all for your input.

Hi

Well that's a new one! 😁.

I usually lose a mouse or audio function when an update is pending.

Thanks for the feedback and pleased to hear the program is now working correctly.
