Program crashes when 100% saved - result video not playable

Juha-Nevalainen wrote on 2/5/2023, 5:52 AM

I was able to create one recording from VHS tape succesfully, but then all my subsequent attemps are failing. I can record the mpg just fine. Then when saving the movie (with hardware acceleration) to disk, it goes all the way to 100%. But then the program suddenly restarts itself, seemingly because some kind of crash occurred.

The result MP4 can be found on the disk, but is not playable. File size looks reasonable but somehow the resulting file is corrupt.

This is V7.0.1.12 on Windows 11. Any ideas what is going on and how to resolve?

Related question - what is really the difference between the mpg under the program folder and the mp4? If I dont do any editing, are they practically the same?

Hi

. . . . when saving the movie (with hardware acceleration) to disk, it goes all the way to 100%. . . . MP4 . . . is not playable . . . .

Is the resulting file size 0 bytes?

What is the specification of your computer system, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full.

In the Program settings, what is the Video mode set to? If it is not set to CPU then do so and try the export again.

Are the drivers for your graphics card(s) up to date?

MPG video is usually encoded in the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 formats which are different from MP4 which is a container format and can contain video and audio encoded in many different formats, the most common being h.264 (AVC) / AAC or h.265 (HEVC) / AAC.

Hi John,

The size is actually 144 MB (for 8min 37s). Can I upload it somewhere for inspection?

This is Lenono P15 Gen 2i, 11th Gen Intel i7-11850H @ 2.50Ghz, 2496 Mhz, 8 cores, 16 logical processors
Two display adapters:

  • Intel UHD Graphics, 1GB RAM
  • NVIDIA T1200 Laptop GPU, NVIDIA compatible

I can check further if you need more detail on them? Yes all drivers are up to date. Win11 is 22H2.

Under Program settings, video mode is set to NVIDIA T1200 Laptop GPU. In the dropdown I can see UHD Graphics and Compatibility mode (VideoForWindows) listed too. Which one to pick?

Hi

As the issue is with the exported video an analysis of the exported vido would help - download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips causing the issue and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

If you want to upload the video for us to have a look at, bearing in mind this is a public website, you can use Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive - ensuring the share is set to Anyone with this link can edit, or a transfer site such as WeTransfer and post a link in a comment, or alternatively PM the link to me if you wish to keep the clip private.

Hi.

I would try the UHD Graphics in the drop-down menu as your file has no encoding data in it (resolution, colour space or frame rate). The graphics processing is not a combination I have seen before but it looks like the Intel GPU is the one capable of doing the actual video rendering. The nvidia card is possibly just helping out with the graphical calculations.

Hi

If @CubeAce suggestion does not work and you have Lenovo Vantage installed on the laptop set the GPU mode to Hybrid as seen in the image below

This is how I have my Lenovo laptop set and will enable both GPUs to be used.

Are the 2 graphics drivers up to date - the latest versions are:

Nvidia T1200 - 528.24 (30.0.15.2824) release date 2023.1.19.

Intel UHD - 31.0.101.3790/31.0.101.2114 release date 10/26/2022

Just an additional remark on this. Curiously that NVIDIA option has now started working fine too. First I thought it is pretty random, but maybe the difference is that I now save the project before generating the clips. That way there is no need to import the tape more than once either. With the crash there was no autosave or anything - so basically all work was lost at that point.

The other major realisation was that it is best to play the tape fully from start to finish before trying the capture. That way the "strained" message is not appearing, and the end result is much better quality too. That seems to help a lot with these very old tapes...

CubeAce wrote on 2/7/2023, 5:29 AM

@Juha-Nevalainen

Hi.

If you don't save the project the project itself would be blank, so yes save your projects if you are not going to render them right away.

With any old tape it is best left 'tail out' when stored and played to the end rather than fast forwarded. That prevents the layers from being wound onto the spool unevenly which can warp the base material.

Then before playing the tape should be rewound to the beginning as a faster separation of the tape helps prevent the oxide from sticking to the wrong side of the tape. The glue which holds the oxide to the play surface dries out over time and allows oxide to be shed on contact to any heads or guide rollers so playing the tape back causes some degradation each time it is played and can clog parts it touches causing dropouts. So the recording should be done with the least amount of playbacks. It is good to have a way to clean the tape path to hand when this happens.

For storage.

Having the tape sealed into an airtight bag with a small amount of bees wax helps (in solid block form) prevent the tape from drying out. Tapes should be stored in a cool dry and shaded area in as constant a temperature as possible having been played and left played to the end.

Ray.
