@Tina-Baker

Hi

The error message would suggest either:

  1. From the filepath that the video file is on your Desktop, try moving them to a folder inside your Documents folder, the desktop is a protected location and should not be used for putting files (of any kind) there, the program needs to write temporary files in the same location as the video file and it is being blocked from doing this.

    If you look in the Program settings, Folders tab, Projects the location where the program expects the files to be should be within the Documents, Magix folder

  2. The AVI file has internal codecs which are not present on the system, this may be possible as it has been downloaded/captured from Youtube .and is in the wrong video encoding format for the program, a MediaInfo analysis, as I requested here,of the AVI file would help.

    Is the clip you have downloaded?

  3. The AVI file is corrupt.

That AVI could be the problem; please download and install Mediainfo. Then, in Mediainfo, open your AVI shown in that error message ("...Green screen Xmas...") and then go the View>Text View. It will show all the details of your file.

Copy all of that text and paste it here so we can analyse.

If it's a free download, you could give us the link to it.

Also, I'm a bit old-fashioned and don't like filenames like that; I'd rename it to remove the .com and the - sign. That probably isn't the issue but you never know! 😉

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi,

As you indicated, the error message in your last images says "...to decode the format 'FMP4'"

Does anyone know which codec will handel an 'FMP4' file?

Here is one that I found but I don't know if it works.

Like the others indicated, you should convert the file to MP4.

Hi Al.

The reason I copied you into my reply was because I know you have had more experience with the MainConcept codec pack and seem to like using it extensively. I also though AVI files were supposed to be the most reliable, easiest to use. I would bow to your experience in this instance as you must have a vast collection of such files.

I also hadn't realised these were downloaded video files, not produced by MEP. I have either missed a clue in the image proved or you and John have some sort of psychic ability I'm not ware of 🤷‍♂️.

I know I did miss what @johnebaker has pointed out, that the files seem to be residing on the desktop or maybe just shortcuts to where the files are. I don't know.

I had never seen an access denied warning popup before this last week and I've now suffered five of them myself.

Mine were down to crashed projects (same project 5 times) that in turn corrupted the project file. There was no additional information attached.

Ray.

Arr, now it's making sense. I Ray must have been referring to FFDShow, which I have installed and it works well allowing MMS to open some weird files. FMP4 is listed as a codec that FFDShow will decode.

@Tina-Baker

Tina, if this is just a one-off file, then I would suggest you convert it with Handbrake. If you will have an ongoing need to import FMP4s, I'll give you some notes on installing FFDShow so MMS can import them seamlessly.

One thing you could try is to copy that FMP4 file, then change the file extension to MP4, then try to re-import it. Stranger things have worked...

Hi Everyone I am going to answer all the questions in this one post, it makes it easier

I do have another version on this Pc and sometimes I revert back to that when I have a quick project and know my way around it much better.

The folder I am using is a folder on the Desktop and I was not aware that using them from there would course issues ..wow ok time to move them and clean up .

I am going to convert all video clips I wish to use, I do use any converter but do have Handbrake , and I had no idea I had files in Avi hmmm.... as for that error message about the file needing the FMP4 that day was the first time I had seen that usually the program just would shut down without warning, and that particular image was just one I had been randomly viewing to see if the issues were still there it might be on a few

I do feel like I have learnt so much from all of you for any future problems for that Thank you to all of you for your help, once upon a time I could figure these issues out but it seems technology is so fast moving now it's like another langue

I hope I have covered all the questions... but now one from me should I still find a codec for that Fmp4 error or wait and see if converting them all would work and if the answer is yes could you suggest a safe one?

Again thank you very much a busy few days ahead by the looks of it , with moving files and converting and checking back in with you lovely helpful people .... I feel so old

CubeAce wrote on 11/15/2022, 2:25 AM

@Tina-Baker

Unfortunately my interest in computers in general revolve around trying to keep them running audio, video, and photo editing programs. It is getting harder, it is not just you.

I think the pandemic put a false skewer on the industries projections making them think that during the lock-downs the increase in tech in general would continue so a good time to vamp everything up.

Now with recessions and people tightening their finances in general the tech and solutions are beyond most peoples ability to afford to keep pace with the costs, the tech industry has outpaced itself. Hopefully this will result in eventual price drops and a slowing down of power hungry systems and a concentration on getting the stuff working correctly and simply at reasonable cost. Of course that is me just dreaming. 🤓🧘‍♂️🙏
