Hi Mike

Looking at the images above - the layout is correct, however it looks like you have not applied Chromakey Color to select an appropriate colour area for transparency on the overlay.

These are the settings I used for the effect in your images above - I did select the colour are from a section of the effect where there was a large area of black, then adjusted the sliders in the order Threshold value, Transition area, Antispill

Hi Mike.

If I could add to what John has said.

You don't have to split the sound from the video on to a lower track if that is what you have done. I find keeping the audio next to the main video track more convenient.

Layers are just that and one can be placed on top of another as long as the transparency layers work with each other. The more layers, the more careful you have to be. The highest track number will effect every other track with a lower track number.

It looks like you are using standard black and white video files, so use the black or white chroma key options for blending and then set the transparency layers to taste. The default settings are good enough to start with.

I have redone my previous project from scratch to show you how I did it but only using files I downloaded from YouTube.

You may find pausing the video from time to time helps. Ignore my use of the mute solo buttons. That was for the sake of showing each track selection in the order I added them to the project during the demo.

Whether you want white or black scratches , blotches, dust particles, hairs etc, will depend on what type of background your video files have and your blend option of using the white or black chroma key which is why for this particular job I prefer black and white video files or files with a transparency layer over files using green or blue screen which is more suited to replacing backgrounds for people to be placed into or other specialised usage IMHO.

Thanx again Ray & John

Apologies: My experience/training was using filters applied directly to a clip in Final Cut. As for sound track fundamantals, etc, that's no problem thank you. I will be using COLOR clips in this project and the output will not be more than 1280X720. Will only need a 'touch' of whatever aged overlay. BTW that older 2005 Magic Bullet application will not install ...

Hi Mike.

I'm not familiar with FCP?

I assume you tried right clicking with the mouse on the Magic Bullet exe. file and tried to install as administrator?

Is it a stand alone application or a plugin?

As to your image. As usual there is probably more than one way to do those things. I'm not sure if there is an incorrect way to do it.

I personally go with whatever method gives me which look of the end result that I like is. Forgive the failure in the clip to move some of the sliders when grabbed. I think my video card is not powerful enough to do some of what I was doing in real time.

Hi Ray

I was asking how to vary/decrease the amount of the effect in the overlay? Applied Chroma Key, and was attempting to vary effect intensity by adjusting the opacity of the effect, (bringing down the middle slider in the overlay clip). At first, it wouldn't work. Now it does?

Still working out the kinks .... Looking to purchase more overlays online.

BTW: Magic Bullet 2005 simply will not install in W10 Pro, (have tried). Besides, its probably not guaranteed to work with MEP anyway ... I used these in Final Cut ... (excellent parameters - different approach as a plug in/filter), not an overlay.

PS: Ray, Are your overlays 2 layers? (occupying 2 tracks)?

Mike

Ray, John

Thank you very much; I got a good education in using 'Overlays' which was a lot different than what I was used to; after using a filter applied directly to the footage. For now, I decided to make the most out of 'Movie Looks' & 'Artistic Effects' (within MEP). Apparently there was a lot more than I expected! I could even insert the effect 'Sand' into the clip ....

Anyway, I hope to be back for more at a later date. You fellows are always patient and professional ...!

Thank You!

Mike

@CarpentersMate

Hi Mike.

Any image or text 'object' could be considered an overlay but how well it will work may vary depending in the desired result and the image object's background. After all, that is the way the TARDIS and all transporter beams work🤣. It's one reason I like the Boris Effects Particle Illusion. It's possible to create a lot of different special effects with. JohnEB uses a more powerful free program, Real Engine? that basically allows 3D animated objects to be created such as a dinosaur, flying bird, etc.

Sometimes depending on the power of a graphics chip it takes time to apply changes made to an overlay. That delay you saw of me trying to move sliders in real time is a part of that delay problem.

The amount of standard effects in MEP has grown over the amount of new releases and one or two disappeared.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . JohnEB uses a more powerful free program, Real Engine? . . . .

It is Blender, it does have a steep learning curve however it is very versatile - it can also be used on video for effects not available in MEP/MMS/VPX.
