No preview display and very sluggish after latest update

pcs800 wrote on 9/22/2020, 2:12 PM

I have been using MEP-Premium for the past few months without issue (after figuring out what proxy files do for acceleration).

Recently, it offered an update which I agreed to. Now I get no video display in preview window, but images work normally.

Additionally, the entire program is sluggish when doing anything with a video file. Creating a proxy file for a single video clip that was 30 seconds long (1920x1080x30fps), took about 10 minutes.

Hitting play while a clip is loaded, triggers a progress bar at the bottom that takes almost a minute to load and start playback.

The version number is 20.0.1.65 (UDP3)

Any help much appreciated

Hi

We need more information:

  1. Computer specification - see this topic for details required

  2. Windows version and is it up to date

  3. Video format you are importing

Specs:

Windows 10, AMD FX8350 4Ghz 8 core, 16GB ram, 1GB, NVidia GT710 video card, SSD drive. Doesn't matter what format video, they all do it. mov, mts, mp4, wmv, any resolution/frame rate.

I have been using Magix video edit pro since MEP 17 (around 2012), I've create dozens of in depth videos on this machine, the update caused this problem, not the machine, not the files I am using.

Is there a log or something I can send? Or a way to revert to the previous build?

Hi.

Although your specs meet some of the requirements as specified on the specs page for MEP 2021 we have seen people here finding their systems struggling or not working as well as it did with the previous release.

Although on the face of it your nvidia card should work, looking at the specs for it on https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-gt-710.c1990

The video card seems to share traits that other sufferers have had with similar problems. Namely I think it needs to fully be able to use Direct X 12 rather than the Direct X11 the site says is needed.

I must stress I am speculating at this point. I don't know for certain.

It's something you could ask Magix support about for sure. In the mean time in MEP try going to File / Settings / Program / Import/Export and deactivate 'Hardware acceleration for playback if possible', and see if that works.

If you want to go back to your previous version of MEP, go to your magix account and download your last paid for copy of MEP. You may have to remove your current copy first but check in your account which version you will be downloading first. Then refuse any further updates.

According to the NVidia NVDEC support matrix the GTX 710 does not support NVDEC for Hardware Acceleration (HWA) of Preview playback with MP4 (h.264), AVC or HEVC (h.265)video files.

The minimum Nvidia GPU required for MEP 2021 is the GTX 1050.

For export HWA you need an Intel processor with the HD250 iGPU minimum, the GTX 710 cannot be used

Turning off the HWA in Program settings, Import/Export tab should get you the preview images back.

. . . . MEP 17 . . . .

Which version of Windows 10 are you using? - MEP 17 became non-functional for me when I upgraded to 1903, if your version is 1903 or later you may find you have issues.

I'm not using MEP 17 right now, I was saying that I first started using Magix video editing software on that version, around 2012 I believe. My OS is up to date, always is.

pcs800 wrote on 9/24/2020, 1:14 PM

So yes, changing that setting seems to have fixed the preview problem. I will look into a new video card. Thanks to you all for the help.

pcs800 wrote on 9/24/2020, 1:46 PM

Another issue with this update is this: I can import video now and it works normally, but after adding a few effects or splitting, trimming, moving, etc. The audio playback starts to crackle.Saving, closing the program and re-opening, fixes it. But then it happens again after a few edits.

Before we move on, I want to say that I am a 30 year I.T. professional and I work for a software company that makes a popular DAW, I am in the QA department. I know audio, I know sound cards, audio interfaces, buffering, asio drivers, everything there is to know about audio on a windows pc, I am expected to know.

With that in mind, I am using a Presonus Studiolive 16.0.2 interface. It's a mixer that doubles as an interface. I can get as low as 2.9ms latency on any daw using it's asio driver. Windows wav or wavrt work fine as well, just not as low latency.

So, with the update to MEP, I am now getting crackling. There are very minimal audio settings in the program preferences. I tried adjusting # of buffers, changing from wav to direct, nothing made a difference.

pcs800 wrote on 9/24/2020, 1:49 PM

Oh and I was mistaken about which version I started on. It was MEP 12, from 2007

pcs800 wrote on 9/24/2020, 1:56 PM

I went to download the original MEP from my account and it is trying to download this same version. Says 20.0.1.56 which is the one I have installed now that is causing all the trouble. Sure would be nice to go back.

Hi.

You mean version 20.0.1.65.

That shocked me into looking for myself. Yes, it appears mine is also registering MEP 2021. (20.0.1.65)

Have a look on your hard drive and see if you downloaded the original version as a backup copy. You could install it from there if you have it. It would have been an option when you downloaded the first (2020) version. It also used to be that the trial versions on the Magix website were often a version behind. You just had to apply a registration code to it to fully activate it. But I just checked and it's 2021. 😒

If you don't have a copy of the 2020 version, try getting in touch with Magix and see if they can help explaining 2020 was working for you and had you known 2021 would not work you would not have taken the offer to upgrade. It does seem unfair you get penalised when it's not clear on their information page that it would not work as expected. Giving an example instead of saying because earlier cards lack this or that it won't work when on the face of it they should, is not in my opinion good enough.

Yes oops, 65 not 56.

Getting a reply from magix support is like trying to contact alien life. You know they're there, but they just never reply.

As I was going through the clicks to send a support ticket, one of the FAQ's came up asking if i wanted to revert back to a previous build. Which lead me to installers for 2018, 2019 and 2020 versions. So apparently lot's of people have this problem.
