No PC sound after installation of MM2016

stewart_tsuji wrote on 8/6/2016, 11:25 AM

I am having a sound issue - I have no sound from my PC anywhere (audio, video, browser, games) other than in MM2016 (which I don't yet know how to use).  I am just wondering how this product has hijacked my sound entirely even when not running.  My PC sound settings point to the right devices and I am running windows 10 and have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo:

https://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-solo

The fix outlined in some threads suggests "switching to Direct Sound" which leads to a direct sound error:

https://gyazo.com/3d1707875a2e6724d850eb3d617d6236

and switching to WAV leads to this error:

https://gyazo.com/1fa27a69dd3aa0cb9f52c709b747d378

the only option that doesn't produce an error is the ASIO driver one.

I hope someone can help.  Not only unable to make any music, I can't use my PC.

Hi

. . . . I am just wondering how this product has hijacked my sound entirely even when not running. . . . .

MMM 2016 cannot hijack the sound when not running - if you are using the ASIO driver when it is running then it can prevent other devices using the audio card.

It is possible that MMM has not shut down properly and still has processes running in the background.

If you have not done so try shutting down the computer completely and then restart it to see if the audio comes back.

The errors you are getting are more likely to be due to the drivers for the Scalett USB device - you must have 32 bit drivers installed for MMM 2016 to work with the device - did you install the Focusrite drivers for for the solo or did Windows 10 install its own drivers?

I have done the following already before posting here:

1) uninstalled and reinstalled the Focusrite Drivers (from their website) - rebooting (from shutdown) after each step

2) made sure the MusicMaker 2016 was up to date with any patches and fixes

3) I have shut down Music Maker 2016 through the task manager because I was wondering if it ran processes in the background that took over the sound while it was not running.  There is nothing there - it doesn't autostart processes on PC boot-up either, does it?

3) ASIO drivers are the only ones I can select in Music Maker 2016 - every other option gives me an error.

4) I have Samplitude Music Studio 2014 and it ran perfectly or at least it did until I installed MusicMaker 2016.  I switched to ASIO from MME and it works now with the following setting:

I hope that flashes us forward to make troubleshooting a bit clearer for you.

Thanks

Hi

What you have achieved suggests the original errors you are getting are caused by an issue with Windows 10.

Was Windows 10 a clean install or an upgrade from 7 or 8?

If an upgrade I would suggest you run a Windows system file check as a precaution against the upgrade causing issues with mixed version files in drivers and DirectX.

Then I would run the MMM2016 installer again and select the Repair option.

In Windows only, what is the default playback device set to? Right-click on the speaker at the bottom right of the screen and select "Playback devices."

none of these replies have helped.  I am extremely frustrated.  Tinkered on my own and got my sound to work on the DAW and MM2016, by basically disabling all my sound devices, unsetting and resetting their properties and enabling them.

Whatever installing MM2016 has done has completely ruined my sound settings.  I have sound on my browser again and with my DAW and MM2016, but it won't work properly with Steam and I have to try other voice communication software to check - I seem to be running into a new problem with every application I open, and I haven't tried them all yet.

1) My device settings, as I have noted at the beginning are set to my Scarlett Solo.

2) My Windows 10 was an upgrade and I've had it since launch without any difficulty with my current setup.  The problem has only started when I installed MM2016.  System File check did not reveal any issues.

If I may pop in on this, since it is not "Solved" yet - have you tried changing the Default Sound Adapter to something else (Sound Device) ? I see that you are familiar with finding the Sound Devices and restting them. My suggestion is to try to only Enable one at a time and try a different one as the Default Device for Playback each time.

I mention this because I also use a USB Sound Adapter (CREATIVE LABS) that works well normally - but some applications have trouble with it and I have to Disable it (or Unplug it) and run off my Onboard ('built-in') Audio adapter/hardware (REALTEK), which is very compatible with everything. MMM worked fine with both, but still seems to work a lot 'smoother' with the non-USB, built-in/onboard Audio Adapter (motherboard audio device). Perhaps this would work better for you, too...

If it helps, I also found a 'special support' Driver (system files that run the hardware) at the Focusrite website here:
https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207546095-My-USB-interface-is-having-problems-functioning-on-my-computer-that-has-an-AMD-processor
But it seems to be mainly targeted towards those with an AMD CPU (and due to there being no date on the posting, it may be out of date by now); but I still mention it here, in case it can be of use to you.

I hope you figure it out soon!

I'm also new here, but here's how I solved the problem.

Go to settings and go to audio/Midi.

In your audio playback section, change the ASIO driver to direct sound.

This way, you won't get the latency benefits if ASIO, but you'd solve your problems with sound.
