Hi

Do you have the latest Quicktime installed?  - if not update it and then see if the videos load OK.

mov files are container files which can have any codec inside for video and audio.

Use GSpot to analyse a video clip and it will tell you which codecs are in the file and if they are installed.

AFAIK  VLC does not share its codecs with other software, so, even though it can play the clips MEP cannot use its codecs.

Hi,

thanks for the prompt reply John, here's some further information...

I have Quicktime 7.7.2 installed which I belive is the most up to date version.

I installed and ran GSpot and the results are...

Video

codec  jpeg          name  Apple Photo JPEG          status  Codec Status Undetermined

Audio

Codec  twos: 16-bit signed big-endia       Info  16000Hz       Stat  Status Undetermined

Not sure what this means?

Do I need to search for a codec called twos: 16-bit signed big-endia?

thanks,

rustynuts.

Hi

I think you are going to have to purchase the AVCHD codec, however before you do can you run GSpot again on a video clip and then click the 1,2,3 buttons below MS A/V in the bottom left corner of the GSpot window as shown in the image below - if this fails then the codecs are not installed.

Hello John,

I purchased the AVCHD codec a few weeks back and those file types work correctly.

I have re-run gspot and clicked the MS A/V button, this is the response...

"Rendering failed. Following is the error reported by Direct Show"

"0x80040265: [unknown]"

Any ideas?

thanks,

Tom.  (rustynuts)

Hi Tom

That means you are missing the correct codec for the video files.

Should have asked earlier - what is the source of the files?

If a camera (still or video),  did it come with some software to install?  You may find that the camera is using a custom codec which needs installing.

One of my pet hates is when a camera manufacturer states they use a standard codec eg H.264 or MOV, only to find it is customised and you have to install their software to be able to use the video clips.

Hello John,

sorry for the delay.

The source of the files are from a panasonic lumix fz100 bridge type camera.

Initially I had the video record settings set to avchd and these files worked correctly once I purchased the avchd codec.  I then changed the setting to .mov and took the rest of the videos and stills whilst on holiday.

During that time I found that I did not get on with the camera and subsequently sold it on my return, so I have no panasonic software that I can use.

I have since purchased a canon camera, their video clips seem to work without special cocecs.

I will try and source the panasonic codecs.

Thanks for your help.

Tom.
