New licencing system

johnebaker wrote on 4/7/2016, 4:16 AM

Hi Everyone

Magix are introducing a new licencing system similar to that for many other products ie 'subscription based'

More details are here.

According to a topic in the French forum this has been in the pipeline since Oct 2014 when it was first hinted at.

Hi John,

I think that there are some details missing.

With the subscription method and updates/upgrades scattered throughout the year, what happens if one doesn't subscribe upon the anniversary date but waits 6 months? Will this be possible? Will the person then receive the latest versions with all upgrades or will some be passed over and the subscriber only receives upgrades during the new one year period? Or will the person have to renew the subscription starting with the last anniversary date? This looks like it could become messy. One may miss an upgrade, say a new tool, and then a patch follows during the new subscription period covering the missed tool and more. How would this work?

What about documentation? How does Magix plan on providing updated documentation or user manuals or Help files containing new features as they come out?

Rather than purchase the upgrade right away, would it be better to wait for 6 months until most of the problems have been resolved with the new version, and maybe some new features added? That way one would benefit from 18 months, no?

Magix should clarify the details.

May be I can be a little bit helpful:

This system means: If you buy today ProX and your neighbour do the same half a year later: both have the same program. the first one with his updates and the second one why is  so late and the new things are build in.

When after a year you are satisfied with your Prox as ist is - you can buy three years later the new one - and you are back to the situation: Every buyer have the same program.

One point - so I hope - have to be changed:

You stopped after a year with the updates and a year on top you need a new pc or something else. Than - so Magix say - you have only the program as you started with.

I hope you understand my english!!

Hi Walter,

What this means is that the loyal customer who always subscribes is equal to the infrequent customer. The only benefit to regular subscription would be to get new features earlier. Then again, that is almost the way it is now.

You are right about the thing that has to be changed. If I change my computer in 2 years, then I lose 2 years worth of upgrades according to what Magix seems to say. That does not seem fair. We will see if Magix can clarify this.

Hi

To me the main advantage over the old system is for people who want to buy Magix near the end of  its(currently) yearly new version cycle. So you are not buying a version that is going to be superseeded in say 2 or 3 months.

I guess the main question without knowing the details is "Will I get more value for my money with the new system?"

You stopped after a year with the updates and a year on top you need a new pc or something else. Than - so Magix say - you have only the program as you started with.

I hope you understand my english!!

Yes, I can not see why you should need to go back to a version without the updates you have paid for just because you want to re install!

No problem with your English Wabu. It is great to have the benefit of your input in the English Forum.

Otherwise - when you have waited for 3 years without any update and have to buy a new one - than you are again on the hill.

We have in Germany since 5 years a meeting (privat) of magix-users and than we meet also some people from the Magix company ( the developer) and than we will ask them if it is possible to save the the last update....

At last it seems possible to save in windows the updates -they are in a temporary file and you can save them before thes are deleted....

I give here more information when I have....

Hi

The biggest advantage of the new licencing system, as I see it, is the end of the annual new version cycle.

I currently subscribe to the Microsoft Office 365 Home suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Access, Outlook, One Note, Skype and OneDrive) and the ability to have the software on 5 computers for a subscription of £80 / €100 / $112 / yr is a lot cheaper than buying 5 licences for the non subscription suites the earlier versions would have cost me, and it is always up to date.

It will be interesting to see what the annual fee is going to be

. . . . At last it seems possible to save in windows the updates -they are in a temporary file and you can save them before thes are deleted.... . . .

That is possible - the only issue is you must copy the file before the update finishes.

Now I guess this subscription method is not aimed at me? Whilst I do have quite a wide variety of Magix programs installed on myDesktop Computer, only MEP has been the one for some reason that I have decided to upgrade each year. No idea why? Other programs I have from other Companies have not been so regularly upgraded. But then I prefer the method of looking at one's finances, look at one's current interests, the marketing information benefits and then decide to buy.

Now I must also admit that I am only an occasional User of a wide number of Programs that over the years I have purchased and installed. I tend to flit from one interest to another just as quickly as the weather changes, it seems. So for me, why do I want to commit to, I guess, a monthly subscription method for something I only occasionally use, although it does look to be the way of the future?

Incidentally another of my interests is Photo Editing and have two (paid for) Programs installed including Photoshop Elements. I recall I did get invited to upgrade to the full Photoshop version for the monthly fee, but for me the jump to the full version was too much of a learning curve for an occasional User, I didn't like the commitment to a monthly fee, and, I understood, that if I stopped the monthly subscription at any stage, okay there would be no further upgrades, but I understood that the actual Program would then no longer work! Perhaps worth clarifying. I therefore continue with my occasional use of an old version of Elemets.

So maybe woth making sure I have the latest Programs before Magix do change. At least then I will have something that children/grandchildren can try out, but with subscription, nothing?

Probably though it will be completely different when we hear more.

George, like you I dislike the subscription model for software use but there are a couple of important differences between what Adobe have done and what MAGIX are now doing:

  1. Adobe's subscription model is predominantly based around a monthly fee for each app you wish to use.  If you stop paying, the app(s) stop working.
  2. MAGIX's model is based on an annual payment which, if you decide to NOT renew, will not prevent your software working; it will simply never "develop" any further than the point reached at the end of your subscription period.  (That is my understanding of what MAGIX themselves have said).

There has been quite a bit of discussion about this on the Xara forum since Web Designer Premium 365 came out.

This link states why they are doing the subscription method.

The main worrisome point is:

"◦Upgrades and patches to Web Designer released in the 365 days after you purchase and register. Note: these updates continue to work after 365 days in any installations at the date of expiry, but if you reinstall the software after the 365 Guarantee expires (and you don't renew) then these updates will not be included (the software will revert to the version at your date of purchase or registration)."

Or as indicated in the above link:

"The copy(s) that you have installed at the time of expiry will continue to run indefinitely, BUT if you re-install on a new machine after the Guarantee has expired then the new installation will fall back to the version you originally purchased."

Previously, one got the newest edition and then nothing was available until the next version was released. The new method gives one the new version and any new features for the coming year. This is a bit of a bonus over the previous system. If one does not renew after the first year and then has to re-install, I can understand losing any upgrades that came out during the subscription period - we didn't have them before; this is a way to entice one to continue with the subscription.

However, what if one decides to not renew after 3 years, does one then lose 3 years (or rather 2) of upgrades, or only the upgrades since the last renewal date?

I think that this is the big unknown and a sticking point. I will post this on the Xara Forum, as someone from Xara actually provides some answers.

I give here more information when I have....

Any idea where the temporary file goes to?

I have 2 subscription type programs from Magix, VPX(8) and AML Premium and each of them had a patch, but this information does not show up in my Support, Customer area, Downloads and Registered products. Both say "No patch available." I have reported this to Magix but they have not replied to this part of my question. Strange that they don't show up.

Thanks,
