new bug in MS2023 Platinum / import PNG image generate FROM MS2023

Roberto-Goncalves wrote on 7/16/2023, 11:49 AM

Hi,

1-create a new project
2-put a picture or even a simple video
3-position the cursor on a certain frame
4-export this frame to a simple "png"
5- remove the image or simple video (as per item 2 above) from the project
6- import the "png" you exported (as per item 4)
7-export the video as MPEG-4
8- when loading the generated video, a black screen is displayed! simple as that!

9- generate a png image from another external image editor.
10-import this image!
11- when exporting this video, now works normally!

I concluded that the exported png generated by MS2023 itself is not RELIABLE!

I use windows 10, 64bits latest version, as well as MS2023 Platinum!
I have not forwarded it to Magix support, because I would like some feedback from more advanced users when it comes to the MMS2023

Thanks!

@Roberto-Goncalves Hi I just did as per your list with no problems, exported png, imported - exported as mpeg-4, reimported ... no problem.

MMS png doesn't contain an alpha channel, so no transparency but I don't recall a problem like you mention.

Can you share screen shots of project settings, export settings, .. so i can replicate as close as poss to what you're doing, Use the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment to upload pictures or video,

PS, after you exported the png i presume you could if you wanted to view the picture on your PC with something like Windows - Photos, & when you import that png back onto the MMS timeline it looks correct?

Hi, Thanks!

See project the images generate in link below!

and ...

see also the settings, where
a simple processing change
from graphics card to CPU also generates
bug for display in the preview itself,
regardless of exporting to generate video!

Hi

I can replicate this behaviour in both MMS 2023 and VPX 15.

It does not matter which video export format is used, the video is blank where the step 4 image is imported.

Similarly the Device Options in the program settings are not causing the issue - I tested with them set to all combinations of CPU, Intel UHD 630 and RTX 2060 - the result is the same.

The issue can be seen after step 7 - playing the exported video in a media player shows blank (black) for the step 4 PNG file, even when part of a sequence of PNG that include other PNG images from other sources.

Importing the exported PNG image from step 4 into any image editor or opening with Windows Photo, the image is displayed OK.

Looking at the Image data the MMS 2023 export Bit depth is 48 bits, wheras the same image exported from a image editor is 24 bit. MdiaInfo analysis confrims the different bit depths.

This looks like a bug with the PNG export or import module .

I will raise a bug report

Hi Gid

Try exporting / importing as above using VPX 14 and see what bit depth you get.

@johnebaker Hi, I tried it dragging the files in from Windows folders & using the Import tab in both VPX14 & MMS2023, same result, no prob with import, export or playback in any software, 🤷‍♂️

Same 48 as with MMS, (bigger file size with VPX🤷‍♂️).

I have an AMD CPU with no integrated graphics so i can't really turn of my GPU in settings, my PC does work but it works like poop if i do turn it off. . don't know if that makes any difference,

Hi,

Confirmed here for VPX15. Very strange.

Project and export with 29.97fps.

I also dragged/dropped the first png onto Xara DPX19, exported to png, imported to VPX15, exported as MP4, imported MP4 - no problem.

EDIT: It gets worse. I tried exporting to jpg, import jpg, export to MP4, import MP4 and VPX15 froze for a minute. My E drive where the files were saved went to 100%. This is what happens whenever VPX or MMS detects a bad file in the folder.

I emptied the timeline and navigated to the folder where the files were saved using the Import tab and the same thing happened - the computer froze for a minute.

Looking at the MP4 file sizes, the first export to MP4 was 70,407. The second export to MP4 but using the png frame from Xara was 4,166,793.

Also, the first png was 8,118,727, bit depth 48. The export from Xara was 2,761,000, bit depth 32. Both were 1920x1080.

Hi John

I cannot replicate the issue with the JPG images, tested with MMS 2023 and VPX 15, they export as 24 bit.

I also tested BMP export, also 24 bit, and no issue.

Hi John EB,

Sorry, I should have clarified that after doing the jpg thing, it was navigating to the folder that caused the temporary blockage. That bad video clip created by exporting the png is what causes the problem. Just navigating to a folder with a bad or difficult file can cause this.

I just reloaded to project and there was an immediate blockage on my drive E. The bad MP4 file is in the Project Temp Folder but not on the timeline and that may be what causes the blockage. I'll delete it, save the project, and reopen it. Nope, still blocking on drive E and the folder is not showing in the Media Pool.

I'll try something else and get back to you.

Hi John EB,

Further to the above, I also had to remove the jpg MP4 file from the PTF as it kept coming up as though it could not be found, I removed from the PTF all MP4 files that I created and reloaded the project. No problem. Then I navigated to the folder with these MP4 files and drive E blocked.

In the image below, the file in the red circle is the MP4 file created by export/import jpg then export to MP4. Strange. No thumbnail. Will not load or be previewed in VPX, but WMV will play it.

The file in the cyan circle is the png export/import MP4 file and it seems to have no problem except that there is no image.

I moved the file to a subfolder and was able to load the project with no problems.

Here is a link to the bad MP4 file created by exporting a frame to jpg from VPX15, removing the original video clip, importing the jpg to the timeline, and exporting to MP4. Please let me know when you've downloaded it and I'll remove it from Dropbox.

Hi John

I can find no issues with the 'bad mp4' file in VPX 15, MMS 2023 or File Explorer.

The thumbnails not showing for the files in the folder may be the folder setting in Explorer is corrupted/changed. This may also be the cause of the hanging issue.

I have also found that deleting the desktop.ini file in the same folder as the mp4 helps.

Hi,

In my tests with MMS2023, CPU was on for some reason in the Device Options HWA for Processing. When I imported the exported png, I got a black screen. When I switched to Intel, the image came back.

The exported MP4 was blank as found by others and as per my tests with VPX15.

As for the bad file that I uploaded, when I navigated to its folder with MMS2023, there was no problem with the E drive taking off. I put the file on the timeline. Then I switched Processing to NVIDIA and the E drive went for a 1-2 minute spin at 100%. Switching back to Intel sent the drive to 100% again.

This is the same problem that I have mentioned elsewhere with my capture files causing similar problems. This has been going on for quite a while.

Try switching HWA devices after navigating to the folder with the bad file.

I'll update my Intel and NVIDIA drivers if there are updates.

@browj2 Same here, Processing set to CPU, MMS pngs show black screen but all my other pngs from different sources do show as normal, I did notice this the other day but dismissed it without checking other pngs as I've no Integrated GPU.

Hi John.

Just running and catching up through posts I missed while I was busy.

It's curious that your E drive is showing 100% activity with no read or write speeds indicated. I have rarely seen that before. Also five drives via USB? Are they all plugged directly into the motherboard USB ports? Is the offending drive on a USB-2 port? (WD My Book Essential Drive is a 5Gbps USB-2 compatible drive)

Have you health checked it with Crystal disk?

I had similar behaviour with MEP and VPX just before I had an SSD die.

No, I haven't checked the HDD, but I should.

However, this only happens with certain files when MMS/VPX comes across them/tries to load them. Opening one of these files with Windows Media Player does not cause the same thing. There is no problem opening these files in another video editor (Pinnacle). As I can pretty much predict which files cause problems (variable frame rate), I run them all through Handbrake and there is no problem.

I will check out my drives.

Hi Ray,

It takes about 2 minutes before the HDD returns to normal and I can edit on the timeline. However, the next time the file has to be read, my drive takes off and there is little that can be done on the computer during this time.

I have brought this up before as I have seen some users who have noticed the same problem or rather the same symptoms - VPX/MMS freezes for a couple of minutes then comes back. When encountering this, most users will shut down the editor with the Task Manager if they can get it open, rather than waiting. The culprit in almost every case where I have encountered the problem is variable frame rate video clips. Not all, but some, and usually from the same source.

Hi John

. . . .  I can pretty much predict which files cause problems (variable frame rate) . . . .

What are the min/max framerates and GOP lengths of the clips that cause this issue?

Hi John EB,

This morning, just to annoy me, I tried a few of the files that normally give me problems in VPX15 - no problems at all. Then I tried in MMS2023 Suite and it hung on the first file. I reopened VPX15 and tried again and this time it hung. The E drive goes to 100% for a minute or so, depending on the duration of the clip, I presume. I tried again and no problem. However, I know that if I use these files, at some point, the program will hang for a while. Once passed through Handbrake, no more problems.

What are the min/max framerates and GOP lengths of the clips that cause this issue?

Hi john.

What created the file as it does not seem to have its original file name. Is it itself a conversion or just been renamed?
