Neat Video-Best System Components CPU and GPU

AAProds wrote on 5/3/2023, 9:00 PM

Gday all, I'm about to pull the trigger on a new system. I am doing an increasing amount of VHS work which entails use of Neat Video and am suffering very slow encoding speeds with my old i5, in the order of 12% speed for 768x576 H264.

For those who use Neat Video on a desktop machine, I would be grateful if you could briefly summarise your encoding experience/speed and what basic components you have eg CPU and GPU.

Thanks very much for any feedback.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

OK Al, using a 720x576 5minute VHS rip encoded to 768x576 using Default SD settings with Audio Equaliser and Compressor, a bit of Gamma + 25 Sharpen and Neat Video Auto Profile + some Temporal and Local Flicker adjustment + Dust & Scratches + Spatial Sharpening High on @ 100%

Encoding time 2 minutes 51 seconds

Hope this helps.

AndyW

EDIT - just realised the above was tested with a VRO copy of the original VHS tape (my father copied it for his anthology), so I've repeated it with a later Lagarith copy of the same tape that I'm wotking on at the moment using the same settings as above.

The Neat Video Auto Performance Settings calculated 112 fps so I class that as the same.

The encoding time was 1 minute 46 seconds; about 1 minute quicker!

I'm sure the speeds would be even quicker if I had the Nvidia 3060 or higher that utilises that BUS setting that I can't remember the name of at the moment.

Hi Alwyn

Using NeatBench I get

Best combination: GPU only (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060): 29.1 frames/sec.

However in the real world I have it set to use both CPU and GPU (RTX 2060) - it runs a little (!) quicker.

Real world exports can vary dramatically according to resolution and noise levels - down to as low as 4 fps for 4K UHD which is really noisy - ie night shots.

I believe Resizable BAR has no effect on Neat Video since it uses OpenCL.

The pure CPU power and number of Cuda cores bring the speed here.

That can be concluded from the results of @me_again and @johnebaker and @CubeAce and myself.

Now we're still missing a result from @Former user with its completely different hardware.

Hi Marc.

While I agree with your conclusions on your observations on Neat Video's requirements, it would be running in conjunction with the program it is used within which would need it's own set of requirements on top of Neat Video's, where additional requirements from components may vary and could hinder or help the combined processes dependant on the capability of the system as a whole.

Note what was disabled in the test.

Neat Video benchmark:
Frame Size:    1920x1080 progressive
Bitdepth:    32 bits per channel
Mix with Original:    Disabled
Temporal Filter:    Enabled
    Quality Mode:    Normal
    Radius:    2 frames
    Dust and Scratches:    Disabled
Repeat Rate:    0% of repeated frames
    Jitter Filtration:    Normal
Spatial Filter:    Enabled
    Quality Mode:    Normal
Frequencies:    High, Mid, Low, Very Low
    Artifact Removal:    Enabled
    Edge Smoothing:    Disabled
    Sharpening:    Disabled

It is therefore perhaps a bit premature to read too much into what effects performance within Neat Video based on the test alone.

Ray.

Got it working. Had to update to Windows 11, but hey, you gotta do what you've gotta do.

Neatbench result: 14 cores, 36.9fps.

MEP 2021 isn't crashing either.

Win 11? Yuk.

@AAProds I hate it. The all invasive OneDrive is driving me nuts. I should have uninstalled it from the beginning. Now, I have to migrate "stuff" that went there, even though I have OneDrive disabled at startup and thought I turned off all syncing. M$ was saying I was running out of space, so how about spending $$$ with them... nope.
