MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found

Jane-B wrote on 10/8/2023, 2:09 PM

Hi,

edited - The problems are only for a certain time. Current videos have no issues.

I bought the 2022 edition of Magix Video software to be used on a Microsoft Surface with Windows 11. Before that I worked a few years with 2013 version.

Im capturing the videos with an iPhone. I have disabled the HEIC video and changed to maximum compatibility a few years ago, after I learned that lesson...

Im doing yearly videos of my family. Working on the 2022 video recently and from month August 22 on there is something weird with file formats.

The videos are most of the time but not always in a JPEG container which Magix certainly does not like. I found out because they were from filesize bigger.

I tried to make a workaround and to download the videos from Google photos which I use for back up of my phone photos.

Those files from google come in a mp4 container. They play on my PC but Magix says the following Error: MXMPEG2 Error 0110: no media decoder found.

Obviosly I would like the Problem 1 solved, so I dont need the workaround. Also I think both problems relate to each other.

Same time there are MOVs, which are not live videos but normal videos but they are also not working anymore.

I analyzed the movies with MediaInfo.

The JPEG has the following infos:

Does anyone has a similar problem and knows why this happens all of the sudden for the files from August 2022. Some files are not like that and behave like usual.

Thanks in advance for anyone reading this.

Hi

The first video data appears to have AVC (h.264) encoded video in a JPG file format, this is not possible, the the JPG file format is not a container file format and does not support video streams.

This which would suggest either:

  • the video has been converted from the iPhone 11 and the wrong file extension has been provided ie .jpg instead of .mov, .mp4 or .mts which are the 3 most popular file extensions for AVC encoded
    video.

    OR less likely

  • the video has been converted to a sequence of JPG images - this gives a 'movie' file similar to animated GIFs however with the .jpg file extension and the header information of the file incorrectly defined as h.264.

. . . . download the videos from Google photos . . . .

The second video file has been converted to VP9 video encoding format by Google Photos, and VP9 is not supported by MEP/MMS 2022.

The MOV file format with h.264/AVC, and also the JPEG or PNG encoding formats, can be imported into MEP/MMS 2022 if you have Quicktime for Windows installed.

If you need to convert the iPhone videos to a 'standard' format eg h.264/AVC in a MP4 file format then a video converter such as Handbrake or Avidemux should be used.

. . . . 2022 edition of Magix Video software to be used on a Microsoft Surface with Windows 11 . . . .

Do you mean the Surface tablet or the Surface laptop?

If the tablet then you may experience issues with editing, preview playback and exporting, they are not designed for video editing with programs such as MEP/MMS 2022, and other similarly featured video editors from other manufacturers.

It looks like your Google photos has converted the file using the same process they use on YouTube.

It has converted the file from the confusing mov file data found i the line,

FileExtension_Invalid                    : braw mov mp4 m4v m4a m4b m4p m4r 3ga 3gpa 3gpp 3gp 3gpp2 3g2 k3g jpm jpx mqv ismv isma ismt f4a f4b f4v

This is Apple being Apple again in my opinion. Has the phone had any OS updates that may have changed how it handles the files?

Jane, if possible. could you post one of your "JPEG" videos on Google Drive (or similar) and share it with us? We could then work out a strategy to convert them into an MEP-readable format.

Alternatively, as @johnebaker has suggested, you could try converting one of those JPEG videos to MP4 using AVIDemux. I have a tute describing how here. After you install AVIDemux, follow the procedure for "MOV to MP4". The process, if it works, will be very quick.

@Former user

I've downloaded videos from YT, Google Drive & Photos, they all were reg MP4 AVC with no sign of VP9, (annoyingly YT accepts 4k upload but gives you back 1280x720 when downloading,I haven't figured out if i can download the orig 4k yet)

Gid, if you upload a file that is at least 1440 high, YT will encode it into VP9. That applies to all your variants right down to 360x. Make your joining vids even clearer! 👍

I use "4K Video Downloader"; it allows download access to every size variant on YT.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Thanks for replying. Yes probably an update solved it. Also I have now a newer phone version than back than I noticed. Still would like to not loose some of the nice summer footage with family. I will try AVIDemux and shared the file with AAprods.

Jane-B wrote on 10/22/2023, 2:18 PM

Update: AVIDemux could convert the clips so they are valid for MAGIX. Thanks alot. This is a good workaround. Still wonder how one full month was having these confusing format mix. Maybe Apple - Windows transfer problem...

@Jane-B

You shouldn't have any trouble opening your raw iphone videos in MMS.

The files from Google Photos are encoded VP9, which I can't open here without conversion.

For the floor, is anybody having any luck opening VP9 codec files either with MMS or VPX?

Changing the file extension from Jpeg to Mp4 solved the initial problem. Problem probably happened when copying footage from iPhone to PC.

Indeed Im experiencing more crashes with 22 edition of MAGIX video software then before with Magix 2013. I use now a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Intel Core i5 1035G4 CPU 1.1GHz, 1498 MHz, RAM 8GB, SSD 250GB.

But the amount of crashes is not super high, so I can work with it.
