@ron-griswold

Some of the most pertinent details about your computer are missing from what you write, unfortunately!

Exactly which CPU and GPU (please list actual model numbers/names); how much RAM; size, type and amount of free space on your hard drive(s).

(I have read back through your posts to this thread but if I have missed any of this data, my apologies!. You will see that many of us put this data into our Signature.)

Hi Jeff

. . . . details about your computer  . . . .

Ronald gave these here in the first paragraph.

@ron-griswold

Hi

I can replicate the issues with the MPG NTSC 29.976 fps file.

On a long file (~ 5 hours duration) the audio does go out of sync and creating a new frametable does cut off some of the end of the video.

I repeated the tests with a MPG PAL 25 fps version of the file and there was no issue with the audio going out of sync.

My conclusion is that this issue is peculier to MPG NTSC format video, which has been known to cause issues with other editors such as Premier, Resolve, Avid etc

In order to get the 29.976 framerate the NTSC format Drop frames are utilised, this means specific frame numbers from the timecode count are dropped at regular intervals to keep the audio in sync.

I have not tried it, however you could try changing the DVC100 recording framerate to 30 fps, this may correct for the drop frame issue as you are then working with an integer framerate.

Alternatively:

  1. if available, set the DVC100 to record in h.264/AVC format, this uses a more accurate method of syncing audio to video than MPG

  2. Record as before and ensure that you continue to record for at least 1 minute to allow for the cutting of the video using the Create (new) frametable feature. Then stretch/shorten the audio as @AAProds adviced earlier to bring the audio in sync. You can then trim the end off the video clip as required.

Recording as PAL is not an option if the source video tape is NTSC.

@AAProds

Hi Al

I seem to remember that you have posted about using TBC to correct VHS video - would this help in Ronald's issue?

Hi John, Ronald.

Sorry I missed that information of

intel i9-9900k , motherboard gigabyte z390-e , hard drive 500 gig m.2 , video card MSI 1660 super . 32 gigs of ram .

Please also put that in your signature. It's where we look for computer specs.

John.

In order to get the 29.976 framerate the NTSC format Drop frames are utilised, this means specific frame numbers from the timecode count are dropped at regular intervals to keep the audio in sync.

Is that why Ronalds MediaInfo has the line "Format settings, GOP : Variable" does that indicate the drop frame problem?

As I could not replicate that in an MPEG-PS render, or produce an NTSC file with no colour primary value. All my efforts ended with GOP M=3, N=12 and a BT 601 NTSC colour primary.

Ray.

i have finally found a simple work around so i can get these videos done. windows essentials 2012 has movie marker as part of a package along with a mail client. so after i finish capturing my videos i import them into movie maker then export them back into my video folder . that simple and doesn't take a lot of time. movie maker exports the video file as a Mpeg4/H.264. when i have more time i will give johns ideas a try. thank you to everyone that offered help. p.s. i will edit my profile soon

Hi John,

Thanks for the pointer to the relevant data about Ronald's computer. I must be going blind or senile or both!

@ron-griswold

My apologies to you for asking for details you'd already given us! I'm glad you were able to find a resolution to the problem.

Hi Ray

. . . . Format settings, GOP : Variable" does that indicate the drop frame problem? . . . .

No, NTSC has a proscribed sequence for dropping frames which is not 'variable' see this article.

thanks andy, good info ! i did find and installed the dazzle drivers from PS's web site and saved them. it's strange how my DVC100 doesn't like to play well with my older version of PS 21 . My audio contains a lot of static when using them together. MS2025 seems to do a good job recording.

John, I'm not sure, as the file seems to be in sync with other programs. Certainly, a stabiliser/TBC will improve the stability of the signal going into the digitiser.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.
