Movie Studio 2024 Choppy/Laggy MP4 playback/preview

Videditor01 wrote on 11/17/2023, 4:42 AM

Hi All,

Recently bought Movie Studio 2024 Suite.

Added some MP4 files and on first adding it told me I needed to "activate" something for copyright reasons.

I clicked activate and it let me add the videos.

However, the videos won't playback in the preview, they just stutter along causing my separate audio to stutter. They also aren't visible if I create a mp4 movie file from the overall edit.

I have no problems playing the videos through a desktop video player and I've also edited the same type of video files in a very old copy of Movie Studio Platinum 13 (Steam Edition).

Any thoughts please?

Seems I needed to change all the processing to CPU as my graphics card is old.

Solution found, hope this helps someone else.

@Videditor01 Hi, you may have found a solution & you say 'my graphics card is old' but can you click your icon at the top of this page - My Profile & fill in your Signature with the full name of your CPU, GPU & amount of RAM, also inc the Windows & Magix version, this will then show at the bottom of your comments 👍👍

Also MP4 is just a container, a bit like a folder on your PC, within that 'folder' there's a lot of info that can determine how well the video plays in Magix, so there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

Thank you for supplying the additional information and it appears you are correct due to nvidia stopping support for new drivers for Kelper based GPUs. A shame as it was a good performing card for its day.

How are you finding the Pocket 3? I have an original Pocket still going strong but like the look of the new versions low light capability. Next to no grain noise when set up well.

You may get stuck at those settings if you expect a smooth playback and add effects until you upgrade your computer but even as it is the results should be good.

Happy shooting and editing.

Ray.

Yes, sadly my system is 10 years old, soon to be upgraded but it has served me well all these years.

The Pocket 3 is excellent, especially as you say, the low light mode is fantastic. Even 1080p looks excellent, but will be upgrading to take advantage of the 4k option of it mainly.

There are a couple of niggles with it, but nothing major, overall I'm extremely happy with the purchase. I just need the system to go with it to make some good edits.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me.

@Videditor01

Hi. No Problem.

It has always been the purchase of a new bit of kit that has always made me have to upgrade my system as well, of which my system is also at the beginning of being less useful than it once was. It copes but if I get carried away with effects as I often do, then it shows its age. I'm also not sure how it would cope with 10 bit files.

Have you had a previous version of the Pocket? If so what are your niggles now? I never went for the Pocket 2, not enough of an upgrade for me to be bothered with but the 3 is now on another level. I've been very impressed with what I have seen online and I would like better low light performance as it seems more than good enough not to have to then further reduce noise in post editing and I do seem to have to shoot in poor light quite a lot.

If you are thinking of upgrading any time soon please come back for advice on what works well with these programs. Personally I would not bother with the latest nvidia cards as a 3060 or 3060Ti would be a good choice and cheaper with any Intel series 11 or above being more than capable as long as you get one with an inboard GPU as well. Even a 12th gen i5 would be much more capable than previous i7 series although a lot of people here would opt for an i7. That should last for another good few years yet unless the tech changes significantly in the next couple of generations.

Did you opt for the creator kit?

Ray.

@CubeAce

I was a big gamer at one point which always forced a system upgrade, more so a GPU upgrade. However, 10+ years of no gaming led to only using the system mostly for work and some light video editing so it's been enough.

Like I said, mid-next year I'll definitely be looking to upgrade and I'll be sure to come back and seek yours and others advice, thank you. Not gaming and upgrading my system means I haven't been keeping up with the technology changes either.

I haven't had a previous version of the pocket, was about to buy the pocket 2 but realised the pocket 3 was rumoured to come out 5-6 weeks later so hung off and glad I did.

My niggles are minor and some potentially just because I'm a new user to the system. As I say, nothing major. I didn't like that you had to register it with DJI after powering on the first 4-5 times otherwise you couldn't use the device. I value privacy and dislike when companies push you to register for something that you've already purchased.

The app they supply also needed to be sideloaded on Android which is a little off for a major tech producer. Of course, you don't need it, but still.

The only other thing I disliked is the case can be a little awkward to get to the device in which sometimes leads to a bit of a roll out of the gimble. I'm told the previous versions of the pocket had no gimble locking feature so this is actually a major upgrade, but still, it rolling itself out when trying to dock it in the case isn't ideal for me personally.

Aside from that it's fantastic, I actually properly used it first in low light at a light festival and the quality was extraordinary. I did an extremely basic quick edit and got multiple comments about how good the video it was, the recorded material certainly spoke for itself and only in 1080p.

I didn't get the creator kit to save a few dollars, but for the difference in price I probably should have. I've already gone on to buy the mini tripod and may add some of the additional lens and battery extender.

I have no use for the microphone and wasn't bothered about a few of the other bits, but for the price I'll pay for the others separately I may as well have bought it.

If you have use for it I definitely recommend it. Sorry for the long reply!

CubeAce wrote on 11/19/2023, 5:16 AM

@Videditor01

Hi.

Long replies are good.

Certainly from what I've seen so far the Pocket 3 is a good upgrade from my original version.

Better high speed recording capabilities in more resolution choices. Exceptional lack of noise in low light situations, Better remote control if it is ever needed. More functions built in without the need for additional add-ons. Larger more visible and brighter screen (OLED) Longer battery life. On screen joystick control. Zoom function. Able to record in both landscape and portrait. More flexible audio options. The mic you are not keen on can act as a separate 32 bit recording device and accept better microphones and just act as a transmitter. So you could leave the mic in one spot, wander around and not have the audio change. Better and more accurate tracking of faces and objects. Ability to automatically change focus for close-up work. 10 bit video at last.

None of which I have in the original.

I think you were wise to hold off for the Pocket 3. The good news is my internal battery lasts as long as when I first got it when it first came out. Just take care to charge it slowly when possible rather than fast charge it and when stored make sure the battery level is around 40% charge.

I bought a third party watertight case to put my pocket into when not in use. I expect such a case to be made eventually for the 3. Although the camera head does not lock when turned off it does stay in position for eight seconds after switch off and makes putting it into a case easier. Using an external mic is an improvement for wind noise and handling noise although the internal ones are exceptionally good. Also I find the use of being able to use a phone as a monitor and the extra control it can give can be useful on occasion.

Looking at it from a DJI perspective. Having to register their devices before they can be used, deter theft before purchase. That reduces cost per unit they can sell them for. You don't have to have the Mimo app active on your phone and don't have to have the camera connected to your phone to use once activated. You can turn off any tracking the device may have from your phone. Files can be recorded without GPS data embedded.

I think you will have a lot of fun with it. It can survive a small amount of light rain and dust. Although the odd faulty unit has been reported by users, DJI are often willing to replace a faulty unit. If you can get it, the DJI care cover is worth having but not available in all countries. I have found mine to be more robust than most people have given them credit for being.

Thanks for the reply again @CubeAce

Do you know the name of the watertight case? I will keep my eye out for a version for the Pocket 3.

One other question I had which I feel you might be able to answer. I'm interested in experimenting with the D Log M mode to colour grade, but I don't see any options in Movie Studio 2024 for this.

I see you can change the basics like contrasts, brightness and colours somewhat but there doesn't seem to be a way to apply 'luts'.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi

. . . . experimenting with the D Log M mode to colour grade . . . .

Assuming that the camera records in D-Log-M then you should be able to get correction LUTs from the camera manufacturer or there may be some already under Templates, Movie Looks.

If there are none for the specific camera you use and you can get appropriate LUTs, i.e. 3D Luts with the .cube file extension, from the manufacturer or other 3rd party they can be added to Movie Studio as follows.

  1. Using File Explorer, browse to

    C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Studio version Content\VideoEffects

  2. Create a folder called LUTPresets if it does not already exist

  3. Create 2 folders inside the folder, LUTCamera and LUTEffect

  4. Put the .cube file(s) into the LUT Camera folder - they can be in a sub folder if necessary - I do this as I have a range of camera LUTS.

The LUTs will now appear under the Movie Looks as shown in my example below

Hi.

DJI produced their own watertight case for the original pocket. There were initial problems with it and had to have moisture absorbing strips inside the case as it produced a lot of internal condensation. Also if anyone overtightened it, it leaked. So far DJI have not released a waterproof case for the Pocket 3. Often these add-ons appear three months or so after first release. There were third party one's available but all seemed to distort the image.

As for LUTS. Occasionally DJI do release one or two LUTS for their cameras but most of the time other DJI forum members put up links to download of LUTS they themselves have created. The link will take you to the DJI forum for the Pocket 3. There are other parts of that site to check out as well for further information. You could also try

Thank you very much for the replies. They're extremely helpful. 👍

@johnebaker

Followed your instructions re: Luts, but nothing shows up in Movie Studio.

I tried on their own in the LUTCamera folder and again in a sub-folder. Have restarted Movie Studio and rebooted but still nothing showing.

Is there another step I need to follow that I've missed?

TIA.

Hi

Where did you get the LUT(s) from? If they are free can you post a link to them.

. . . . Is there another step I need to follow that I've missed? . . . .

Possibly - if you received the LUT(s) as a zip file, i.e. the file extension being .zip, .7z or .rar then the .cube files need extracting from the file and put into the LUT folder location.

Hi.

Yes, you missed step 2:

MSS (at least the perpetual licence one) doesn't have a folder called LUTPresets. Only VPX has such a folder as standard as far as I'm aware but the 365 version of MMS may have, I don't know. Presumably John doesn't know either as he may not be running the 365 version. But you can create the folder to place and use your own LUTS into. As the folder probably doesn't exist it won't have some of the DJI LUTS in there anyway. Not that there are any for the Pocket as fas as I'm aware of. I have only ever seen LUTS for their drones to date.

I just copied the folder from VPX and placed it in my copy of Movie Edit Pro which is basically just an older version of Magix Movie Studio.

Hi,

@CubeAce I followed step 2, you can see the LUTPresets folder created in my earlier post image.

@johnebaker I can't find the original download link but this looks similar:

https://www.dji.com/uk/downloads/softwares/transcoding-mavic-3

It was a 7z file I originally downloaded which I extracted and only copied the .cube file into the created folder.

I renamed it slightly to see if it made any difference, it didn't.

Videditor01 wrote on 11/23/2023, 8:14 AM

Found an old solution of yours by searching the forum posts from 2020.

Using Notepad enter the following text only

fileextension=cube
include_subdirectories=true

and save it as ias_config.ini and save it in both the LUTCamera and LUTEffects folders.

This worked. Thanks for staying with me through this, much appreciated.

Although I do get this now.

@Videditor01

Hi.

Sorry I missed seeing your image.

Like I said, for me I just copied the folder over from VPX and didn't think anything of it as it worked.

I have found though an additional two folders inside that folder and in both of those folders I found these additional files which may be important. Perhaps @johnebaker can shed some further light on the msi file and ias_keyfile.

No problem, every suggestion is worth trying. The ias_keyfile was indeed important it seems. Now it shows though, it seems it doesn't work for some reason, see my above image.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

I did notice the DJI site had an Osmo Pocket 3 CUBE file as well as another couple of possibly compatible D Log CUBE files.

Is that the one at: https://www.dji.com/uk/downloads/products/osmo-pocket-3

?

It's the one I'm trying to use but throwing up that error message.

CubeAce wrote on 11/23/2023, 8:46 AM

@Videditor01

Do you also have the msi file shown in my image above?

You are getting a plugin incomplete message.

Maybe it is that file. John would have it on his system in VPX and it may be that it can reside in any relevant folder and does not have to be in a MMS folder. VPX and MMS share their third party effects but normally not the differences in the software programs.

Basically this is a hack but has worked in the past as far as I know.

I don't have the .msi file.

It's frustrating they seem to have changed working features as the program has changed.
