Move text and graphic together?

terrypin wrote on 6/29/2012, 7:00 AM

Have I missed/forgotten some simple technique that will let me do the following please?

I have placed a text caption over a yellow background as shown below. (I place both simultaneously using a custom tfx file.)

But I want to place more such pairs. Is there some way to 'lock' the yellow graphic to the original text, so that I can then move the pair together to a new location before simply changing the text? At present I'm moving both independently and then carefully positioning the text every time, which is tedious.

Hi Terry

Try Grouping the two objects and ensure you are in Effects, Movement SIze/Position to move them together.

it works for me.

Thanks John, but that doesn't work here!

I add a title in track 3. I add a rectangle in track 4 and make it semi transparent. I select them both and use the Group tool. I am in Size/Position.  I click over the superimposed objects and drag. Only one of them moves.

Is there some basic musunderstanding? Are you perhaps talking about the obvious way to move multiple objects on the timeline, rather than in the monitor?

Hi Terry

No misunderstanding - I did exactly as you have done and I moved them in the monitor by dragging.

Morning John,

Then I'm obviously doing something wrong - but I'm darned if I can see it! I'll have another go after breakfast.

But it's great news that it is possible.

Please to report major progress: I can now get grouped movement! (Haven't yet established what I was doing wrongly.)

However, this changes the relative sizes of the two objects. Here are screenshots showing what I mean:

Before move

After move

Another result of dragging I got at some stage

It must be because my red box was made by importing one of my standard red rectangles and then reducing its size and shape to suit the text. Any suggestions on how to achieve a move without altering relative sizes?

Hi Terry

Something odd going on there - I used a 1600*900 single colour image and resized it the same as you and it worked OK.

Hi John,

This will drive me nuts unless I sort it!

I've made a short YT video in the hope that it will offer a clue as to what I'm doing differently to you.

Hi terry

I can repeat this - do not know why it was OK the first time.

If you readjust the text after the first move back to the correct size it appears to hold this correctly every time it is moved after that.

IIRC correctly this text resizing issue was also intermittently present in MEP15 or 16.

I would suggest you file a bug report.

Cheers

John

Thanks John. Half sorry, half pleased to hear that. I was hoping to discover some possibly obscure step or setting I'd been missing. But at least I can now get some sleep!

I will report it as a bug, but based on experience from MEP12 onwards I don't expect to ever see it fixed.

Can you please spell out the steps in detail for that work-around you briefly mentioned please. I can't get that working here. After the failed group move (or moves, if I try several times) I ungrouped, then selected the text and enlarged it again. But after regrouping I cannot succeed in the correctly scaled group move that you apparently get.

Hi Terry

After grouping and the first move, when the text goes very small, double click the text object .

Select the Title Tab, General then change the text size.

Click away from the Title tab and it should then hold the size as you move the group.

Many thanks John, that works.

And I now know why I wasn't originally able to move a group at all: I was using MEP17 at that time, which doesn't do it! At least, I can't get it to do so. Just moves the box and leaves the text.

Pity, because MEP17 is my current preference. I can't work comfortably with some of those MX bugs. Particularly the one that prevents my using Centre and Maximize, as discussed here:

Hello Gentlemen,

New user here but what I have found that works for me is to click on the icon in the center of the screen between the Ungroup (seperated Chain) and the Razor blade, From the drop down menu select "all Tracks". This allows me to slide all tracks in unison and the text and sound all move together with the video. BTW, I am using MEP 18
