.mkv File Type

enigmabg wrote on 10/6/2013, 2:12 PM

I have some video files with a .mkv type extension. When I try to import one of them into MEP pro plus 2013 the program freezes and will not respond to keyboard or mouse inputs - I have to use task manager to shut it down, then I can restart it. if I try again with a .mkv file the same happens. Files with a.MP4 file tyep extension can be imported and edited without problem.

Hi

While MEP 2014 supports MKV files,  because the MKV file format is a container file, whether you can import them or not depends on the internal video codecs used and whether they are supported by MEP.

Use GSpot or MediaInfo to analyse one of the files to find the true codecs which are used for the video and audio.

GSpot will also tell you if it can decode and play the file - using the buttons under M/S AV at the bottom left of the GSpot window.

Thanks for your quick response.

Gspot just said no codec found

Mediainfo was much more helpful in confirming it was a Handbrake manipulated file and the codec was AVC (AAC for audio), so I just added a ".ts" extension to the end of the file name and...

MEP pulled it in and played it perfectly.

Why should that be? I have always struggled with the concept of containers and unfortunately this confuses me even more (I should have expected MEP to be able to examine the file on its own and select a codec). Still it seems to work. Perhaps I shall try adding .mpg or .mp4 etc. and see what it does with those.

Anyway, thanks again

Between GSpot - which is probably correct in that the codec could not be found based upon the file extension and Handbrake transcoding which may be none standard bitrate/sampling - and MediaInfo you have found the solution.

With the mpg file extension you will probably get 'invalid file format' error, mp4 may work.

Thanks for sharing that.

I endorse MediaInfo, but only partially.  It can tell me a disc is 2.1 audio but on a surround system the rear speakers are active anyway (which is what I was seeking to achieve during the compilation).

The alternative?  Gspot.   Now while I might want to check it out if desperate, and while I believe any loving partner should be intimately familiar with the concept (should it apply), nonetheless the adoption of the term onto software as a double entendre is not only irresponsible...  it's downright juvenile.

Do I want to download this to my "puter"?

Sorry for slow reply to your answer - things have been hectic for an old one like me!

Anyway, after I had reported that adding a ".mpg" or ".mp4" extension worked, I did finally try a ".avi" extension - what a surprise that it also loaded and played without hesitation, so there is a method to get MEP to load and play .mkv identified files. Good and thanks for your help and guidance.

I still have to admit to being completely lost with the concept of a "container". Perhaps I spent too much time with mjpeg, simple(?) mpeg and DV videos where in the past, as far as I was aware, containers didn`t figure, or if they did they never caused me any problem!
