MEP17 HD Preview Stutters and unwatchable

MardukAU wrote on 8/26/2011, 9:42 AM

Hi all. Im new to the world of Video Editing and recently (Last week) purchased MEP17 Download. I have a HD Video camera that i used while i was on holidays recently. after i import the HD video files into the timeline, if i try to preview any of them, the playback is choppy and jumps around.

I have tried changing the settings in both my movie and program including the Video settings and preview settings to Low Quality but still can not resolve the issue.

Updated 27/8/11

My system is a 3.2 Intel Core 2 Quad, 4 GB Ram, NVIDIA GTX285 Video Card, Win7 64bit, MEP17 Plus Download Version,

I have more RAM (Another 4GB) and a new Video Card (NVIDIA GTX570) Coming next week.

But is this problem a setting in the program. Or should i wait until i get the new computer parts next week and hope that fixes the issues.

Thanks

Hi

If you have a 32bit Windows OS adding more RAM will not help.  A 32 bit OS can only recognise and use approx 3Gb of memory.  You will need to upgrade to a 64 bit OS to use more than this.

Try changing these settings :

You can also speed things up a little with all your video files on a second hard drive so you don't have Windows and MEP competing for the same drive.  Video editing is very hard on HDD and will imperove long term reliability of your system drive.  Also ensure you have good backups.

Hi John,

Sorry i forgot to mention im using 64bit Win 7, and also the MEP17 Plus Version. I have played with those Playback settings you have recommended but still have the same problem. The problem Only applies to the HD 1080 footage i got on my new Video Camera. The older footage shot from a Canon Powershot Camera (in Video Mode) works fine as its lower res.

I need to preview some of the HD Video as it was taken in the car and i need to edit out some background noise. But i carn't do this as the payback stutters all over the place.

Only thing i have not tried is moving the project onto my 2nd HDD. Is there a easy way to do this within the Program so i dont loose anything?

Thanks for your help.

I just tried moving the windows swap file onto my other HDD but this did not fix it. I have put all preview options onto Low quality and still have the issue. It is a little better but still unwatchable and exporting the movie just to check if i have everything completed takes many hours and is a pain.

Thanks.

Hi,

You might try experimenting with the playback cache settings, which for me sometimes influence performance significantly.

Hi

To transfer all your video files copy them (don't move them) to a folder of your choice on the second drive.  Then start MEP and change the path settings as required.  The image shows mine - my second drive is W: (X,Y and Z are my external backup hard drives) and I keep all my Magix projects and files in a folder called Magix (very unoriginal )

Rename the original projects folder on your C drive so as MEP cannot find it.  Start MEP and open an existing project on the second drive, MEP wuill ask you where the files are - click the Directory button and point it to the new folder - you may have to do this several times but MEP does get the location and will load everything.  Save the project.  Close MEP and then restart and load the same project to check that it hascorrectly remembered the new path.

When you have done this for all existing projects and everything is OK, remove the original files from your C drive.
