MEP17 HD dvd playback rolls on big screen, no color on hi-def tv, diagonal stripes on old tv, plays fine on computer

PowerWagon wrote on 11/20/2011, 9:15 PM

I am making coasters.  Burner settings are: standard dvd NTSC, interlaced, 720 x 480 resolution, aspect ratio auto.  On the projection tv, the picture rolls like old sets did when vertical hold was out of adjustment.  On the hi-def tv, the picture is solid but the video is grainy without color or audio.  On an older set, there are diagonal lines running down the picture, also without rolling.  The disks play perfectly on a computer.  These were probably shot with a hi-definition camcorder (I am triyng to make this disk for a friend - my first project with MEP).  I've made dvds successfully with Nero, so I know it's possible.  Where am I going wrong?

Hi

'Down grading' HD to standard DVD is not normally a problem.

Taking the symptoms you describe one by one:

1.  The rolling suggests the projector TV cannot lock on to the frame sync - check you have the frame rate set to std NTSC - 29.97fps.  I suspect it may be burning at 60fps if the source video was from a hi-def camera.

2.  Playing a standard DVD on and HD TV will make apparent the poor quality of SD on HD, you need a good upscaling DVD/BD player to get anything better. The DVD player may also not be able to lock correctly on the signal hence the loss of colour - see 1

3.  Diagonal lines on old set - see 1

HTH

Thanks for the quick reply, John.  However, in the Burn section under Encoder Settings/Advanced MPEG Settings, I found these:

Basic Video Settings:

MPEG Type: DVD,  Video Format: NTSC (USA, Japan), Interlace Mode: Interlaced (bottom field first),

Summary:

Resolution: 480 x 480, Frame(s): 29.970 (non drop-frame), Aspect Ratio: Auto (4:3 display)

I am a rank beginner as far as video goes, but these settings sound right to me.

Hi

The resolution setting at 480x480 is wrong for NTSC DVD it should be 720x480 (unless of course the setting you gave is a typo!!)

Also try changing the interlace mode to Top Field First.

Typo for sure.  I'll change the interlace mode and burn another.  At worst I'll have a complet set of four coasters.  Thanks again for the help.  Fingers crossed....

Well.  The burn only took about five minutes compared to the 3~4 hours for the previous ones.  I also checked Smart Rendering and Apply anti-interlace filter.  I opted to rewrite chapter menu as well as film menus.  I popped the disk into the player on the big screen and the title screen was rock solid.  I smiled.  When I hit play, the rolling started just as with the three previous disks.  It looks so damned essy on the tutorials.
