I have Magix music studio 7.  in the past I have used a standard PC microphone to record. Although that does a good job for basic recordings, I would actually like to use this great program to do a demo for my band.  I have a great Alesis mixer that is USB compatible......can I use a mixer to laptop to put the recordings into Studio 7? Or do I have to have some other type of MIDI interface??

Magix Music Studio 7 is an older version. In past you might have been using but questions is what is your present operating system?

Any way as per Amazon I got following details which are self explanatory:

Product Features

This full set of composing and recording tools makes it easy to work with and release your own compositions
Live input for recording, using the multi-track mixer with 32 stereo channels
Add real-time effects like echo and surround sound and great new stereo enhancements
Non-destructive. wav and MP3 editing tools that let you resample, reverse, pitch shift and more
Add drum loops, distortion, compression and cross-fades to add the best in production values

System Requirements

    Platform:      Windows NT / 98 / 2000 / Me / XP / 95, Mac, Linux, Unix

Please also check the PDF help file that seems to got more information which might help you.

Hi

. . . . Or do I have to have some other type of MIDI interface?? . . .

MIDI is something entirely different has nothing to do with the Alesis mixer.

The question is whether Studio 7 will recognise the USB input as a recording source and be able to use it.

This you should be able find out from the recording source options in the software, assuming the device is recognised by Windows and, if necessary, the correct Alesis  drivers are installed.
