LUT downloaded and usage

derek-williams wrote on 12/16/2020, 12:28 PM

Hi. Sorry to bother you all with a rookie question, but I tried trial and error, google, youtube, and the manual first. I just bought and downloaded the Cinema LUT package. How do I now use them with my project? I can't figure it out. I have Movie Edit Pro Premium.

@derek-williams

Hi

The Cinema LUT package should be on the Templates tab under Movie Looks.

To use you drop the required LUT on to the video or image object, for multiple objects you will have to do this for every object.

Hi,

The LUTs are not there. . I tried to drag it from my downloads but it won't work. Is there something else I can try? I just see the basic ones that come with MEP. Thanks.

Hi Derek.

Why have you not unzipped the folders? The files would be compressed.

Hi Derek,

I presume that you purchased this on Producer Planet, correct?

You need to go to wherever your Videocontent is located, usually under:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro Premium\VideoEffects

and create a folder called:

LUTPresets

Move or copy all of your unzipped files to folders under this:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro Premium\VideoEffects\LUTPresets

using the name of each series as a folder, i.e. Cinema LUTs Fantasy_Normal, etc.

Restart MEP and your LUTs should be under Movie Looks.

BTW, that is not a rookie question.

Hi John,

Yes, I purchased them from ProducerPlanet.

Thanks for the info. When I get to MAGIX, the next folder is "Movie Edit Pro Premium" (there is no "common/videocontent folders". When I click on that, the only folder is "documentation" and inside that is the manual. I looked through all my other MAGIX folders and couldn't find a "video effects" folder anywhere.

I tried to put the LUTs in a "photo and video" folder and a "downloads" folder, but it didn't work. Do you want me to do screenshots of my folders or do a video?

CubeAce wrote on 12/16/2020, 8:11 PM

Hi Derek.

The folder should be where John specified. I checked on my system and added a folder there called LUTPresets.

Are you sure you looked at the Public Documents and not your User Documents?

However.

@browj2

Hi John. The folder does not show in MEP once placed.I even rebooted my PC to check.

I copied the LUTs folders in the image below from VPX to MEP Plus:

As you can see, they show up in MEP2021 Plus.

Did you copy and paste that folder from your copy of VPX to MEP?

Hi,

I'm sorry. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I doubled checked the images I sent, and it does say "public docs", then to MAGIX. There is an arrow point to it that I put by accident. I keep trying to redo it, and even googled how to get to public docs, but it's telling me the same thingI'm doing.

I tried to copy and paste your folder steps too, and it can't find it.

This is new computer, only a few weeks old. So I tried it on my other computer too but got the same results.

Sorry for being an idiot.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

You screen shot indicates that there are no folders under LUTPresets, thus nothing will show up in MEP. I think that you have to add a valid folder or something. I tried dummy stuff, including the translation.ini file, but nothing shows. There must be an ini file somewhere that I can't find where the names can be defined.

@derek-williams

Which version of MEP do you have? If it's not 2020 or 2021, then the files will all be under:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro Premium\2019\VideoEffects

or something like that.

However, if you have 2020 or 2021, then you had the option to change the location of the videocontent. If you did this, then only you will know what you did. Note that mine is on my B drive with a different path because my C drive was getting too full. Also, I don't know with which version of MEP that enabled the use of LUTs.

Further to my last post, can you post an image of an unzipped folder so that we can see the structure.

I've just been through the manual and I can't find any other way to get the LUTs to show up. If the method that I outlined doesn't work, then I'm out of ideas. Still, there must be a way.

I noticed that in Video Pro X, there is a + beside Movie Looks allowing one to search for cube files and apply them. As well, there is a box in the object properties to select a LUT. Not in MEP, though.

@derek-williams

Hi Derek.

First, you are not an idiot. You asked a reasonable question hence I tested John's reply to see if I could duplicate what he advised could be done. Even if a folder is empty within MEP it should show if the folder is accepted or meant to be a part of MEP. A good example of this is the user presets section in the Templates section.

Which is why I asked John if he had initially copied and pasted his VPX folders across to MEP which may work. I haven't tested that yet. If that does work and the suggested method creating a folder doesn't, that suggests there are files associated with the folders that allows the program to 'see' and 'use' them. If that is the case then there are two problems.

One. You would need a copy of VPX to copy the folders and files across from.

Two. As far as I know MEP does not use cube. files anywhere natively in it's original downloaded form. I do not know how LUT packages then appear in MEP when bought through the store. (If indeed they do as I have never bought any so don't know.) This was something I hoped one of the other users would know.

Maybe @johnebaker would know more about that.

One reason you may not be able to see the files or folders is because in Windows those files and folders may be set to 'Hidden' within Windows. People like John and me have this option changed in our Windows settings so we can see and change things that most normal users do not need to do. It could be you can not see these files and folders and would need to change your windows settings to do so. I'm not absolutely sure on that point but would explain your problem of not seeing the same things we are.

Ray.

The folder path

C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro Premium\VideoEffects\

when copy and pasted from Explorer becomes

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Movie Edit Pro Premium\VideoEffects\

Folders can have two different names, the display name and a 'canonical' (real) name.

Derek

The above folder path applies to MEP 2020 and 2021 if you are using an older version of MEP then as John CB has commented the folder location is either

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro variant\2019\VideoEffects

or

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro version variant\VideoEffects

Where: version = 4 digit number and variant = Plus or Premium

To clarify the above discussion once you get to the VideoEffects folder you must create the following folders:

LUTPresets inside which you create 2 folders LUTCamera and LUTEffects

Depending on the LUTS you purchased, they may be Camera LUTS or Effect LUTS - they should go in the appropriate folder.

Use subfolders in the LUTCamera and LUTEffects folder to further categorise the LUTS as shown in the image below - the LUTs may already be in a folder in the Zip file - if so copy the whole folder into the appropriate LUTCamera or LUTEffects folder

Subfolders will appear in MEP as shown in the image below

Note you will not see the category I have X out above in the folder image above.

Hi John EB.

Please look at the image to see if I have followed the folder path correctly and labelled the folders correctly.

Now, bear in mind I have no files to put into either of those folders, is that the reason neither of the folders still don't appear in my copy of MEP?

Ray.

OK.

So now I deleted the files I put into MEP and then went to VPX and copied and pasted the main folder in question with its further two sub folders and now they appear along with their contents in MEP.

So is it the content LUT cube. files that made the difference or are there other files within those folders than need transferring?

Hi Ray

That is the correct location.

. . . . So is it the content LUT cube. files that made the difference . . . .

No, however you did trigger me to check if a support file was needed which it is.

Using Notepad enter the following text only

fileextension=cube
include_subdirectories=true

and save it as ias_config.ini and save it in both the LUTCamera and LUTEffects folders.

The reason why John CB and I did not have to do this was we had previously copied LUTs from VPX to MEP.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for giving me a good laugh this morning.

@johnebaker

Hi John CB

You're quite right about the display and canonical names, just to confuse us.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

It was late and I was tired, suffering from non-lead poisoning after spending the day making poorly soldered copper piping joints using non-lead solder. I finally won the battle.

I tried making a dummy folder under LUTPresets and populating it with the same structure as the others, including one cube file. Nothing showed upk as you found. So, John EB found the correct solution, the additional LUTs have to be under one or the other official folders. Now for the mystery of how the Travel LUTs get there.

As for MEP not being able to use the camera LUTs, I cheated. MEP gave me an error stating that the file MxVfxLUTCamera.vsx was missing, so I copied it over from VPX.

Now we have a solution and we should tag this for the future.

That said, I don't use LUT effects. If I wanted something like this, I would use Pixelan FilmTouch 2.0 PRO as it has hundreds of Looks and each one can be modified with the controls in the interface.

Good one. I saw that ias_config.ini in the translation file but didn't know what to make of it.

Hi John.

So now if Derek can find or even see those folders, the folders can at least now be created and used used for his purchases. Assuming Derek has not been put off.

Sounds like another tutorial for someone 😉.
