Is there a way of purposely masking 16x9 down to 4x3 ie adding side blanking bars but retaining 16x9 overall size?

I am in the process of capturing 8mm film on a Full HD cam using a special projector which allows the camera to capture the image on the film directly - no transfer screen.

In order not to loose picture info, I am retaining the original picture frame height.  This produces black content on each side of the screen including sprocket holes on one side ( the projector allows capture of the whole film frame).

I wish to be able to clean up the sides of the captured video with the possibilty of blanking out the sprocket holes etc.

I am not trying to obtain a 4x3 aspect video, but only retain the 4x3 approx within the full16x9 screen similar to pillarbox format.

The video will only be played on wide screen products-16x9.

I have MEPv18.

Camera produces AVCHD files in 16x9.

Is there another program that may  do this?

Mike

Hi

You do not need another program!

What you need is on the Effects tabs, Movement Effects, Section.   Look it up in Help or the installed pdf manual.

Just out of curiosity - how do you sync the camera to the projector?

Hi John,  I will check out what you suggest.

The projector has variable speed /shutter and uses led lighting source with an enlarged Film gate.

Speed can be adjusted to eliminate the  flicker.     (avail from a USA supplier ).

Cam is set to 25/ 50fps.

It is effective to the point that minor cracks can be seen on the film emulsion.

I have many 8mm home films from1956.

Hi John,

You are on the ball!

'Section' is the effect needed - I had seen it, but did not think it was what was needed - possibly due to the wording.

Works as  required  3x2 aspect is probably the best option in my case.

Thx
