installing same version of Movie Edit Pro?

friendflyer wrote on 12/6/2023, 6:24 PM

I have MEP version 17.0.1.128 on one computer and I want to install the same version on my other computer since Magix allows use on two devices. Unfortunately the installation link from the Magix website only updates to 16.0.4.124 which is significantly different than 17.0.1.128. I need both computers to have the same version. The problem is that, as you can see in the image below, 16.0.4.124 says there is an update to 17.0.1.128 but the link only takes you to purchase the 2024 version which is not what I want. I already purchased the new 2024 version and I don't like it. Question: Is there any way to get the 17.0.1.128 version?

@friendflyer

Hi.

The short answer is no.

In the past you received any patch or program version change that was released within the year period of purchase. That included any program version change (upgrade as opposed to an update patch) within that period.

That practice changed and now you are only allowed to have any patch released for that version of the program if you wish to either do a re-instal of the same program to the same machine or a fresh second copy to a new machine. It has been like that for some time.

@CubeAce what is "a fresh second copy to a new machine"? I am somewhat confused. Isn't this what I am doing if I am installing the same program on a new machine?

Also I still have the .exe in my downloads from the updated version (17.0.1.128) but when I run it and try to install it on the second machine the serial number does not work so my only recourse seems to be using 16.0.4.124.

I suggest you contact infoservice@magix.net and explain the situation. They may give you another P3 number to activate that second copy. Well done on keeping the main installation EXE file. I always save it for this very scenario but I am surprised that your P3 number for your first copy doesn't work on your second copy. You can copy your first-copy P3 number from Help About...

That update message is probably hard-wired to give you the update, as per your 12 month update service (as Ray says, in place at the time), because it is (trying to) taking you from MEP 2017 (v16) to MEP 2018 (v17... IIRC). But in the meantime, things have changed and it will try to update you the latest version. I have MEP 2021 on my machine and when I check for updates, it tries to take me to the 2024 version.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi.

What I mean by a fresh re-install on the same machine is if you uninstall your present copy and properly deleted the files from the system, then the new instillation would go back to the version you bought and not the version you now have running which by the sound of it is a newer version that the one you bought rather than patches to the old version.

Also, I would check that the version you are trying to run is compatible with the operating system of the computer you are trying to install the program onto. Sometimes an old program will continue to run on a computer that has upgraded its operating system with the programs on it already, as opposed to trying to load the program onto a new or formatted drive.

However you could do as Al suggests. I am intrigued as to what the response from Magix will be. So far, response to requests from people running older software has not been amazingly great.

@CubeAce @AAProds Update: being curious why this version did not install I decided to do a complete factory reset on the computer and voilà, it worked. I now have the same version on two devices. I am guessing that maybe a previous installation of MEP somehow interfered with the installation. Maybe it's possible to address that problem without having to completely wipe the computer with a factory reset but I am not tech savvy enough to know how to do that.

CubeAce wrote on 12/11/2023, 1:11 AM

@friendflyer

Glad you found a solution.

Not sure what you mean by a factory reset as I built my own system but whatever you did obviously worked. Thanks for getting back with your working solution.
