Install moviestudio2023suite_dlm_geu7q2 crashes on Win 11

drewmo wrote on 3/5/2023, 9:28 PM

Excited to have just got my new PC, but when trying to install Movie Edit Pro 2023 using the downloaded installer, moviestudio2023suite_dlm_geu7q2.exe, I get a crash screen say Abort, Retry or Ignore. None of them do anything, other than abort the installation. Running ok on my old Windows 10 PC. Anyone have any ideas? Is this a Windows 11 issue? Or my new PC having problems? Its a Lenovo Legion 5 i7-12700 desktop with a RTX 3070 video card.

HI

. . . . Lenovo Legion 5 i7-12700 desktop  . . . .

I hope you mean laptop, - good choice I have one and am very satisfied with it.

. . . .  I get a crash screen say Abort, Retry or Ignore. None of them do anything . . . .

There should be more to the message what is the full text of the error message?

There are a couple of Windows settings which you need to change/temporarily disable:

Apps, Advanced app settings, Choose where to get apps is set to Anywhere but warn me before installing an app that's not from the Microsft Store. - this is necessary as by default it is set to Microsoft Store only, which means none Microsoft programs will be allowed to install.

In Windows Security you may need to turn off Ransomware protection temporarily to get the program installed - the setting is in Privacy and security, Virus threat protection, Manage ransomware protection, dont forget to turn this back on.

I would also advise the following:

  • In Lenovo Vantage that you turn on Hybrid mode - this will enable programs, such as Movie Studio, to make use of both the Intel and RTX GPU's in the laptop.

  • If Norton or McAfee or other 3rd party antivirus is installed, uninstall it and use the bulit in Windows Security - you will have fewer problems with the performance of the laptop.

  • Check that both GPU drivers are up to date.

Hey John, thanks for taking the time for such a detailed reply!

To your comments...

Actually, it's a Lenovo Legion T5 261AB7 desktop. I think it's pretty new to Lenovo's range. I got t from Costco (in the US) where it was $1250 after special offer of $350 off, which seems a pretty good deal for a i7-12700 and a RTX 3070 :)

Regarding the error message, unfortunately, that was all there was. Just a white box with those three buttons, all of which actually just did the same thing.

So, anyway, after playing around for a while getting to know the computer (not with the Magix software, but just generally), I quickly came to the conclusion that I wasn't too keen on the new Windows 11 OS. So I created a dual boot and loaded Windows 10. I've just loaded up the latest drivers, and I'm back on familiar Win 10 ground. So quickly tried the Move Edit Pro downloader, and presto! Program has loaded and it all works! So, I can't actually say whether the steps you suggested would have fixed the problem, though it's odd that the installer worked on my fresh install of Win 10, but not the factory Win 11. But again, thanks for the suggestions.

Tomorrow I will try switching on the hybrid mode. I've just downloaded the latest nVidia software, and I see that it had a choice of either games focused drivers or 'creativity' focused drivers, so I loaded the latter.

Again, many thanks for the help!

Hi

Good the hear that Windows 10 is OK, Windows 11's security has been screwed down so tight that you have to 'jump through hoops' to get some programs installed.

As this is a desktop, Hybrid mode may not be available, or necessary, if the Intel UHD 770 iGPU is enabled and listed in Movie Studios Settings, Device options tab, Import, Processing and Export options - leave these set to the RTX 3070.

If the iGPU is not listed, I would suggest enabling it in the in the BIOS.

Are your working with 1 or 2 monitors?

I understand why you did this but Magix' technical staff advise that they test the software with the Gaming drivers since they believe that is what most users will have!

As you can see from my signature I have a much lower-specced NVidia card but have always used the Gaming drivers, without problem.

John, Jeff, thanks both of you so much for the suggestions and comments. Per Jeff, I switched back to Gaming drivers, although it seemed to be working ok with the Creativity drivers. Maybe I'll try them again some time later to see if I notice anything. Per John, I checked, and no, only the RTX 3070 is showing, so I might try enabling it in the BIOS at some point. But I have to say, for now it's all working, and the image handling and export speed are phenomenal compared to what I've been used to with my old first gen i7 and AMD Radeon 5450! :) So again thanks for your help!
