Importing NTSC VHS on PAL system

Daniel-K wrote on 1/5/2020, 8:25 AM

Hello,

I'm trying to import my old home videos which are in NTSC using RYVT(Dutch version). The problem is I'm only receiving black and white video. I imported my Dutch videos no problem, when I tried to import my US tapes I ran into trouble. When I tried to import the US tapes as PAL I got sound and colour but no video(just the first frame). When I try to import as NTSC I get sound and video but no colour. I'm using the following settings.

My setup is as follows:

Aiwa GX810 VHS player (with NTSC playback on PAL TV) > Composit/scart > MAGIX usb connector > PC (Win 10 64 bit)

software is MAGIX Video easy Rescue Your Videotapes! Version 6.0.2.31 (UDP3)

I checked all the systems and they work fine on my European television. Does anyone have an idea how I can get colour on my video?

Cheers, Daniel

@Daniel-K

Hi

Are the NTSC tapes commercial VHS?

If so you may be being defeated by a copy protection system that was used to prevent copying or the tape is encoded as NTSC 4.43 which gives the symptoms you described when trying to playback and capture using the wrong NTSC standard.

Are there other NTSC options in RYVT in addition to the NTSC_M_J ie NTSC 4.43 ?

Hi John,

Thanks for your quick response. No these aren't commercial VHS, they shouldn't have copy protection. The other NTSC options in my version are NTSC_M which gives the same issues and NTSC_443 which gives no video.

For the rest I only have the following options

Only the NTSC M en NTSC MJ give video. All the others don't give video.

Hope this helps narrow it down.

Cheers, Daniel

Hi @Daniel-K,

I hope you're fine.

I'm having a similar issue as you. You can read it in this post: https://www.magix.info/us/forum/ntsc-in-black-and-white--1264041/#ca1625269

Did you fix yours? If so, how?

Thank you!

Hi @Bruno-Fernandes,

Sadly I didn't find a fix for this issue. Eventually I just send my tapes to a professional service that could digitize ntsc tapes.

Hi all and @johnebaker, I have the same problem on my Hi8-cassettes from USA. I see the picture in the camera (Sony Video Hi8 also from USA). The picture in RYVT is also green at the bottom. Maybe something about NTSC?

I have tried to change the options to the three different NTSC mode, with no luck, it is almost like it is a few options short to get it percectly tuned. The camera and the oldest cassettes are from 1993... I see the pictures perfectly in the camera.

My version is 5.0.3.113.

Hope someone can help :-)

Thanks, Trine

Hi

From the image it looks like there was a loss of video signal and/or synchronisation.

Have you tried using a cleaning tape the clean the video heads?

@johnebaker Hi again John😃.

I have ordered swabs to clean the video heads, but before I start I find it hard to belive this is actually the problem since I see the video fine in the camera.

The picture above was after stopping the video. It "feels" like there is a NTSC-mode missing. It is almost there. I can hear and see what is giong on in the recording in the program, but the picture is not perfect. You can see the green stripe in the bottom, and the purple stripes in the picture. See new attached pictures.

Hope you have other suggestions also.

Kind regards, Trine

Hi Trine.

Could it also be signal loss via the cables? Are you plugging the convertor into a USB hub rather than directly inserting the convertor into the computer? Is the computer quite old? It could also be an oxidized connection. Did you try another USB port? If you are using any type of USB hub, don't.

@CubeAce Hi Ray, it is a new computer. Bought last year. I am not usinge a hub. I will try my other USB-ports, but it has worked fine with other cassettes (from Europe) in the same camera. And also with connecting a VHS-machine to the Magix converter.

@CubeAce @johnebaker Thanks Ray, I moved it to another port, and it is getting closer. Now the stripes are gone, but it is in black and white, and the green band is still there....

@VHS-lady

Hi Trine.

If the other tapes have worked then the problem must be with the tape to head transfer and not the equipment or recording chain.

Not all tapes will age the same or maybe stored in a different place. The magnetic strength of the recording may have weakened over time or it could have shed some of its magnetic coating. The reason you may still be able to see it on the viewer of the recorder is the shorter signal path between the heads and the monitor as it is all within the recorder.

As john suggested, a cleaning of the heads may help if cleaning gives the playback head a stronger signal (makes better contact with the head) but beyond that I don't know what else to suggest. As I said, if some tapes are playing without problems it can only a few things.

1: The tape has lost some of it's magnetic properties. (possible recovery)

2: The heads are possibly dirty and causing a barrier to weaker signals. (possible recovery)

3: The tape has buckled on one side and not making complete contact with the playback head. (Irretrievable but why would it play back on the recorder?)

4: Last possibility and this is an odd one.

The tape was not recorded on that machine and the heads of the machine it was recorded on did not have the same head alignment this recorder has.

(retrievable if sent to a company specializing in such transfers if they are very good but again why does it play ok on the recorder?)

This is how I understand the problem. Someone else may have other views or possible solutions.

Ray.

Tanks a lot for the explanation, Ray @CubeAce. I will then try to clean the head. The recording of the cassettes is done by the camera I have. The recordings are from 1992-1997. And have probably been stored different places during these years. So it is probably then your suggestion 1 or 2 that might be the problem.

CubeAce wrote on 2/20/2021, 11:18 AM

@VHS-lady

No problem.

Since I replied there is one more obvious weak point that occurred to me. The connectors going into the camera. Oxidization of the connectors themselves or internally where the connectors are soldered to the circuit boards. A light spray with electrical contact cleaner into the sockets and left to dry a short while may also help. Eight years could be enough time for this to happen if you live in a higher humidity area of the world. If the connectors are gold plated, this should not be a problem.

I read in another thread that there might be an issue with the driver (red, black and premium). I have downloaded the latest "MAGIX video converter" Drivers - the red one, but I do not know if this will help - or if I have installed it correctly yet. 😟 now I really do not know how to fix this.

Hi John,

It is a Sony Camera, Handycam Vision. CCD-TRV108E PAL video Hi8. The cassettes are Hi8. I says PAL, so maybe this has something to do with it or is it not the PAL-system it is reffering to? It was bougth in USA, as far as I know. The cassettes are Video 8, and the recordings are done in USA, so they are also most likely bought in USA.

I have used the camera on other Hi8-cassettes from other friends of mine (Norwegians). And it has worked fine with the RYVT program in the PAL-mode.

Hope you can see a solution.

Thanks for your time.

CubeAce wrote on 2/21/2021, 7:11 AM

@VHS-lady @johnebaker

The pdf manual can be found here.

It states it is a PAL recorder so we can rule out trying to use a NTSC decode.

Can you check that the video cassette is on the approved list?

Also did you record the video in Standard mode or LP?

Ray.

. . . .  . CCD-TRV108E PAL video Hi8 . . . .

If the camera was bought in the US then it should NTSC, the PAL version should not have been available there, unless it was a 'grey' import.

What I cannot find is the Video aspect ratio - from the images above it looks like 16:9 recorded in a 4:3 video format, ie is Anamorphic, hence the green band at the bottom.

If you have a spare tape, make a note of the cameras recording settings, record a short clip then try and import this.

What settings are you using for the project and import of the video?

Hi John,

To the question: Also did you record the video in Standard mode or LP? It is not my recordings, and I do not think my friend will know what they did back then. I assume SP, but would LP give these signals? In that case where can I adjust settings?

I have a lot of cassettes, the picture below shows the oldest (1992) and the youngest recordings. As far as I understand they are on the list: 8 mm video cassette and Hi8.

It works fine on PAL with the latest cassette (Hi8). So it seems it is the older video 8mm cassettes that is the problem. I get the same view with the PAL M setting and the NTSC M setting. Slightly better with the PALin fact. I have tested all the settings. I am double checking with my friend about the camera.
