Import via browser does not see videos beyond certain folder depth

bitman wrote on 6/6/2016, 1:54 AM

Is there a folder depth limit (or name lenght limit) in Magix video to import videos?

For example the video edit pro 2016 premium does not see any video's in folder s1 (see vbelow)

E:\A A REIZEN\2016 Sri Lanka\VIDEO\RX10\S1

when I move a video out of that folder one folder up (e.g. straight in RX10) it is seen and can be imported.

os: Windows 10

Yes and No - there is a folder path character limit, however it is in Windows not in the program.

The folder path length you have is well within the max length of 260 characters.

Try the following:

  • Check the name of the S1 folder is just S1, ie does not have any leading or trailing space or disallowed character eg the $ symbol.

  • Try renaming the S1 folder to a different name and then see if you can access it in MEP.

  • Run a chkdsk from a command prompt to check the files and folders integrity

There is nothing wrong with the folder name or integrety. Windows can access it, and other NLE's like corel VSX9, vegas pro 13, da vinci resolve, can all read and import video's from it.

I also have other folders named S2 and S3 on the same folder root with videos. Also they apear empty.

I made a new folder S4 with only one videofile (from S1), and Magix sees it and can import it.

However the folders S1, S2 and S3 contain a lot of video's each about 10 to 30 s from my RX10 camera, so I suspect Magix's own internal browser falls short in handling this. I do not know what the maximum nbr of files (or file size, or combination of both) in folder can be for Magix. Maby it is due to the peculiar nature of the video files. I shot them in sony's XAVCS format.

P.s. also Magix Pro x version has the same issue.

Ps.(2) on a side note the current windows 10  max folder path length of 260 char will soon be increased significantly in one of the upcoming win10 updates !

Hi

. . . . S1, S2 and S3 contain a lot of video's . . . .

How many?

I have project folders containing between 500 to 1700 video clips in AVCHD format and they dispaly correctly in MEP and VPX.

. . . . the current windows 10  max folder path length of 260 char will soon be increased significantly . . . .

That is good news.

Hi all

SOLVED !!!

The reason I did not see any video clips in those specific folders via the MEP or VPX import browser is because for some obscure reason MEP or VPX adds (probably depending on the folder contend) an EXTRA tick mark to a 4th display option of the MEP browser.

Note that this extra option tick mark is normaly hidden (and as such not ticked) in other folders with (say "normal") types of contend or contend structure. Normally I you would only have as display options list, details, large icons.

This 4th extra tick mark is called "DVD MEDIA VIEW", if I untick this mark, then my videoclips are seen and can be imported. This is quite annoying that it is set by default due to some obscure folder contend reason, but I can live with it. I can only guess it is falsely triggered in this so called dvd media view due to me having manually copied the video clips of the Sandisc contend from my sony RX10 camera including some xml files and a thumbnail folder...

Hi

Many thanks coming back with the solution.

. . . . This 4th extra tick mark is called "DVD MEDIA VIEW" . . . .

I cannot find anywhere to turn on this view, there is nothing in the manual or help that I can find either, which leads me to suspect you may have uncovered an undocumented feature activated by a keyboard shortcut.

Is this option still available to re-enable after you have unchecked it?  If so can you post a screenshot of the dialog box and the keyboard shortcut that uses it.

Thanks

To answer your questions: this 4th option to view is NOT due to a particular keystroke or keyboard shortcut (it also  DOES NOT have one listed next to it), as I said, it purely and MAGICLY (or should I say Magixly :) appears due to certain contend in a folder where you are pointed at. In my case Sony' s new XAVC-S clips with xml files and a thumnail folder straigth from the camera. It does not show in folders with only XAVC-S ONLY clips or only other type of video clips in it. I suppose in the case it appears, it thinks my folder has a DVD structure (which is not the case)

When the 4ht option is present, it can be unticked or re-ticked at will. Untick and you see your clips, retick and they disappear. Below a screenshot

Some extra info: the issue of not seeing video's in the import browser is as I found out - see "solved" in one of the below answers,  not due to folder depth limit as my post title suggests, but due to a strange extra mark that apears in the vieuw options "dvd media vieuw" (and ticked "on" by the program), this was hiding my video's in the folder.

I just found the culprit to simulate this behaviour, so if anyone want's to see this, here is to simulate this:

1) make a folder, drop in a videoclip (does not matter which type)

2) in that folder make an file which is called "MEDIAPRO.XML" (e.g. just remame an empty .txt file)

3) open MEP and voila you have the extra vieuw option that hides your video...
