Sometimes just left clicking in various sections of the MEP screen will fix this aberration.

Or try the F9 key.

Or closing and restarting MEP (version unknown).

Or using File > Settings > Reset program settings to default...

Thanks Terry, though I realised last night that it must be an option as the 'Window' tab at the top allows you to select and de-select which windows are visible, and somehow I had unchecked the media pool one.
