I dragged an MP4 file into the timeline, then it shortens in size???

I really hope someone can help.

I have a perfectly fine MP4 video file. It was created using capturing software/hardware for an XBOX game. Never had ANY problems before.

The file itself plays totally fine in its entirety using VLC player, no glitches or anything.

But as soon as I drag it into my MAGIX MEP17 timeline, the file shortens to about 3 seconds.

When I hit the playback button, it plays no audio and 3 seconds of what looks like a compressed clip (basically my entire MP4 file sped up to play in 3 seconds).

Why is it not recognising this file? It's currently hit & miss, it will play some of them totally fine and others get shortened and squeezed?

I hope someone can please help!!! Thanks

Hi

  1. Which version of MEP are you using?

  2. Is it patched up to date?

  3. What is your computer specification and Windows version?

IIRC, I've seen this behavior with older versions of MEP too. IIRC, the problem was that the frame rate or some other parameter of the .mp4 wasn't the same as what MEP was expecting for your current project. Newer versions of MEP warn you if the parameters of your import don't match the parameters of your current movie and offer to adjust your movie.

VLC can tell you the parameters of your mp4. So check to make sure they match your movie in MEP.

I can't remember if MEP 17 offered to recreate frame tables as the newer versions do. (And MEP 17 is no longer installed on my Win7 box.) If it does, you could try recreating the frame table - but I vaguely recall that that didn't solve the problem for me.

If push comes to shove, you might have to run your .mp4 thru a conversion, via VLC, to make it mp4 again. (Or, I just learned about Freemake video converter - although if you use it, download the off-line installer and watch out that you don't let it install unwanted bloatware products.) Or you could try converting it from .mp4 to .wmv in VLC and bring it in to MEP that way.

One last option, albeit not very appealing, is to use MEP's screen recorder to record your video off a full screen VLC playback of your .mp4. I've done that when all else fails.

Started with MEP 11, then 17, then MX, then MEP 2013, 2015, then 2016. Changed to the fast competitor after that, which worked fine with my non-Intel hardware. Then bought a used Dell with an Intel GPU, just to play with MEP again. Installed MEP 2020 Plus in March 2020, even tho I don't like losing patches if I have to reinstall after a year.

Testing on a Dell Vostro, <s>i3-8100</s> updated to i5-9400 w/ UHD 630, 16 GB 2400 DDR4 (CL15), Win10 Home, heavily NTLite'd. Now with GTX-1650 Super OC'd. Added a WD Blue M.2 for OS (PCIe 3), Apps, Temps and Video-In. 2 Monitors. A WD Blue SSD for outputs. (SATA III.)

Thanks for getting back to me, in the interim I just converted my MP4 into an WMV using converting software and it works fine now. Thanks again
