How to select multiple objects

gomango wrote on 2/24/2013, 6:32 AM

I have tried all the below but they dont work. Only the first one turns yellow even with the shift key down and I drag the mouse along with the left key depressed.

When the Shift key is pressed, multiple objects are selected. You can open up a rectangle positioning the mouse over the object, then holding down the mouse button and marking all objects within the rectangle (”elastic band selection”) by left-click-dragging.
Any object can be combined with others to make up a group, to avoid the objects being unintentionally moved out of relation to each other. Once they are combined, clicking on one object of a group will select the entire group. To group or ungroup objects, use the buttons in the tool bar or the corresponding commands in the "Edit"

Hi gomango

The correct way of selecting objects is as follows:-

With the mouse in Single mode -

1.   Selecting a continuous range of objects:-

    a)   left click the first object in the range, then holding down the shift key click the last object in the range you want to select - all other objects in between the first and last clicked will be selected.

    b)   drag the elastic box over the objects you want selected - there is no need to press the shift key.

2.   Selecting random objects not in sequence

left click the first, then holding down the Ctrl key, click each of the objects you want in the selection

With the mouse in All tracks mode

Clicking an object selects all objects, while the mouse button is held down they all appear selected - when the mouse button is released only the object you clicked on is selected.

Once the selections are made a click and hold down on any of them will allow the selected items to be moved.

The above are the normal behaviour of the mouse in MEP.

Are you saying that none of the above work?

John

Thanks for keep replying John,

If I select first object by holding down shift and then left clicking the first object it turns yellow if I then go to last object and do the same only the first object stays yellow and the rest of stay orange. If I then click on the first object and and slide them to the right they do all move but drag some sections of the sound track with them.

I use Norton Ghost and thougth that this could be the problem.  I uninstalled the programme and reinstalled it but it still remembered me and so even though I uninstalled it there must still be parts of the programme that are remaining somewhere.

What is the elastic box section and where do I find it?

Thanks again,

Ged.

Hi Ged

. . . . If I select first object by holding down shift . . .

You do not need to hold down the Shift key when selecting the first object - this has the possible consequence that if an object is already selected elsewhere on the timeline, then you will get everything between the two objects selected which may not be the ones you want.

Always select the first object then hold down the Shift key and select the last object in the range to get them and all others in between.

. . .  slide them to the right they do all move but drag some sections of the sound track with them. . . .

If the audio is grouped to the video then it will do so, unless you ungroup it first, as I posted in your other question, before selecting the objects, or it was included in the selection and you do not want it you can de-select it by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking once again on it; ie you can toggle whether an object is selected or not

. . . .Norton Ghost . . .

This will not affect MEP, however Norton Security Suite may stop proper installation of software or prevent it updating from the Internet

. . . . What is the elastic box section and where do I find it? . . . .

Sorry was referring to your 'Elastic Band Selection' ie dragging out a box on the timeline.

John
