The size of an export depends on pixel resolution but also, and much more importantly, the file format and the particular settings of that format. Using a still image as an example, a 24 bit per pixel .BMP file is about 900 KB while a.JPG can vary from 5 KB (simple image lowest quality compression) to 280 (complex image a best quality compression).
MEP's export menu lists near a dozen file formats from uncompressed video (equivalent to a BMP for each frame) to very highly compressed formats intended to streaming etc. Further, there will be for most formats an 'Advanced...' button where you can set various options such as quality and degree of compression.
If you say what settings you used and what you are going to do with your import there will certainly be users willing to make suggestions for the best options. You can certainly try some different combinations and see for yourself the file size and quality of viewing. As your 640x480 is close to standard DVD size I'd suggest MPEG at quality 15 (max) as a starting point.
i did figure out how wo make the video smaler in size by setting the performance setting lower.
but that is nowhere near intutive.. Need someone to look at other products to modify some of the naming conventions on your settings. I just started changing things. I never would have thought to myself that Performance would have allowed me shrink the file size.. Maybe something like quality.
I get the feeling that that blow out in file size was a glitch and not a result of the Performance setting. As your numbers below show, the file size estimate is probably about right for the settings indicated. Did you change Performance to more than the default (9) by chance. I have seen changing this create incorrect encodes when set to 15. Changing it should only change file sizes slightly.
You could say it was confusingly named but it is referring to the speed at which the encode will take place because it is telling the encoder to not spend too much time searching for changed blocks of pixels from one frame to the next. So it's pupose is bring an increase in that all important speed, of what can be a slow process. The secondary effect is that it will give away some quality for speed, and it does indicate this in the dropdown box.
No i did not change it from it's default ( 9 ). when I tried that setting ti was the first time I had ever seen it.
I think it has something to do with Video Resolution and video size...
But, the lowest I could get the file size and retain decent quality of the video was about 15 meg.
Also plaing around with those settings is very cumbersome, and you can never seem to tell what is going to work best.
Look at the settings for TEncoder on sourceforge.net... I used it and my video quality was actually better and the file size was smaller ( 11meg in size ).
I'm sure with time I could figure out the best way to get the same results with Move Edit Pro but with TEncoder I added my video ( that I cut down and removed the bad sections of my video with move edit pro ), selected 640x480 mp4 video and ACC for the audio disabled subtitles and converted the file.
