How to activate step sequencer in Revolta 2 and Samplitude Pro X4 Suit

I love the synth sounds in Revolta, but cannot figure out how to play a step sequence.

Just click the small yellow dot to activate the step sequencer and select a destination (which kind of value the sequencer should change) and turn the the depth control knob all to the right for the maximum effect.

Nothing. Do I need to play notes? In the center box it shows number of voices when I play my MIDI controller, but no steps happen. What is the simplest way to get any sound to respond to the sequencer? Others on here have said the step sequence has glitches..
