How do I select only a portion of an additional music backing track to lower the volume so that an existing narration can be heard clearly

Using Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus.

I have added a backing track and want to lower the volume of a section of this track while a narration plays from the original imported video. I can't work out how to select the portion of the backing track to adjust the volume, then bring it back to the original volume once the narration has finished.

Hi,

This is known as "ducking" or "damping" or sometimes "dampening."

Your background music is probably on track 3 or 4. Right click on it, select Volume Curve. This will show the curve on the track. Make the track higher to see the curve better and to make it easier to work with. Click on the green line (volume curve) where you want to start dropping the volume and a point should appear. Click a little bit further where you want the volume at the new level. Move to where you want to start raising the volume, click, then a little further where you want full volume, click. Now drag the second and then the third points downwards to the acceptable volume.

If you want to adjust the volume of the video, then you should have audio and video on separate tracks - Ctrl+H to do this.

Note in the image that I went to Effects, Audio effects. everything is linked - Volume in the dialogue box will move as you scroll across the selected object. Keyframes are created where you added the clicks to the volume curve. You can adjust the locations of the keyframes and the points on the curve will move horizontally.

You can add a point by placing the playback marker where you want the volume change, then adjust the Volume in the dialogue box. A new point and keyframe will be generated.

You can also do automatic volume control in the mixer on tracks during playback and the volume curves will be created and modified.

There you have it; several ways to do what you want.
