How do I import music scores

wordmuse wrote on 4/25/2015, 3:22 PM

Hi,

I compose music with scoring software (Harmony Assistant). It allows me to export in a number of different formats.

It's soundbase isn't nearly as good as that of Music Maker 16.  Is there any way to export from HA in say, Music XML and have Music Maker import it so I can use MM's soundbase? (I can also export from HA to the formats shown here: http://bit.ly/1DL1DSu)

Please let me know if you need clarification about what I want to accomplish.

Thanks.

Hi

AFAIK this is not supported in MMM.

Cannot Harmony Assistant export to MIDI file which you then import into MMM and then edit the instruments etc where needed?

Otherwise this workaround, though it could be messy, works

Export the score from Harmony Assistant as a PDF file - it must be a music notation file not an image file -  then use this software from the same developers as Harmony Assistant to convert to MIDI then import

Thanks, John.

HA does support .mid export. (It's in the screehshot I linked to in my opener).

But I don't see anything in MM for bringing midi files in. I see that I can add an image to this note (rather than linking to it), so here's a screenshot of what I see with MM import.

I don't see anything for bring in a midi file off my local drive. Am I missing something obvious?

Once I import the midi file, I'm thinking that in order to make the instruments sound like Music Maker instruments, I have to export and import each instrument individually. Once each instrumet was brought into the MM environment, I would then associate them, again individually, with an appropriate MM instrument.

Would this be accurate?

Thanks.

Hi

. . . . But I don't see anything in MM for bringing midi files in . . . .

You use the File Browser tab to navigate to the MIDI file you want to import and drag this on to the timeline. The next steps are the messy bit if you want each instrument on its own track and to be able to change the instrument type :-

  1. Copy the midi file on the timeline and paste it as many times on a new track as there are channels in use.

  2. Double click the first midi track object, this will open the Midi Editor.  Select the Midi channel filter as shown below to select which channel to show, repeat this for the other tracks you copied to.

  3. You can, if you wish, delete all the none highlighted parts for each track just to leave that channels instrument - I would do this - it saves getting confused when editting or changing instruments.

Midi channel filter:

NOTE: this method is only practical for 2 or 3 channels - when it comes to a complex arrangement like that shown in the image then it is not practical.

I guess I need to figure out what to do for more complex arrangments.

I like scoring individual notes and building my music a step at a time. But the soundbase for HA doesn't produce the quality sound I like, especially for the brass instruments.

The search continues...

Thanks much.

Hi Bal,

What you are looking for is something like Magix Samplitude Pro X. There is a sale on in the USA and Canada that ends soon.

There is also a separate forum for this.

http://support2.magix.net/boards/samplitude/index.php?act=idx

However, it doesn't allow you to import musical notation, but you can create it.
