how do i go from just having the project window covering my whole screen to having it split with the project window at the bottom the media pool and the preiview

Which version?

There are 3 windows, Preview Monitor, Media Pool and Project Window. To get just the Project Window, you had to have pressed on the little button at the top right of the Project Window. Press on it again or press on Esc, or, as Markus indicated, F9 - that is the F9 key on the top row of your keyboard, not F and then 9. F9 does a reset of the Windows to the default.

Alternatively, if you can see the top menu, click on Window, and make sure that all 3 windows are selected.
