When I add a text-layer I want to change the background color from the standard black, to a color of my choosing, but when I select a text and click on "Advanced..." I only get to choose between black and white. How do I select a RGB color?

You haven't told us what product you're using.
I normally import a background of my own. But you can use the built-in method. In MEP 2013 and other recent versions, for a plain background:

Thank you, but that is not quite what I mean. With your method you are using a premade image, and the tests I have conducted using that approach has been dubious at best. I would really prefer to set the color directly within the program (Magix Edit Pro).

As Terry just said, his method is using standard Magix tools. I think you are asking '...directly within the Title dialog window.' which is not possible because of the way MEP titling works:
Titles, as they appear on the timeline, are graphics objects, same as say a jpg file you can create yourself in a bitmap editing program like 'Paint' by printing text onto a plain background. What is special is that the chroma key effect is automatically applied -- either 'black box' making the black regions of the title object transparent, or 'white box'. For this reason the usually invisible background choice within the advanced section of the text editing window is only black or white. The visible background is whatever you put on a higher (lower number) track.
Just what did you mean by 'dubious' test results. Can you describe the limitations or better supply a screen shot?

Can you explain what you mean by this.
Are you actually wanting to put the text on a coloured background and hide any video or image behind it, as has been explained below - and this is the only way to do it without using other objects - or are you wanting the text a different colour as shown in this image ?
