@trevorjharris

Hi Trevor and welcome to the user to user forums.

This is quite possible and probable but this is a completely new product to most of us here so we don't really know for sure. Most of us would not have a copy of this program to check for you.

As stated above this is purely a user forum with no Magix staff present but I think that it is likely this is a disabled function as it works in the other programs that have it within the Magix family of programs.

Ray.

Hi

From the Movie Studio 18 manual page 197:-

. . . . If the current project contains data in the BDMV/MVC (Stereo 3D) format, the burn
process cannot proceed. Due to licensing stipulations of the Blu-ray Disc Association, files
in BDMV/MVC (Stereo 3D) format cannot be burned to blank optical media
. . . . .

Similarly Dolby Surround Sound is not available for exporting due to licensing conditions - AC3 can still be used, however Stereo only.

Hi John

I think this only relates to burning 3D Blu-ray discs. Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum could both export MVC encoded files. In any case I think this is all smoke and mirrors from Magix as the opensource software tsmuxer can create 3D blu-ray discs and also Frimencode can encode MVC files. A search of the Movie Studio Help for MVC reveals:

Video

MPEG-4 H.264

The MPEG-4 H.264/AVC codec is suitable for all types of material; however, it requires relatively higher CPU power for later decoding.

In the advanced encoder settings of the AVC encoder the "Generic" options in "Main Settings" are mainly interesting.

The AVC preset and video format can be adjusted here. For instance, if DVD quality is desired you should select "DVD". The video format should be selected specific to the country so that the material can be played on the devices most commonly available in these countries. For instance, you should select PAL for Germany, SECAM for France and NTSC for the US.

MVC

MVC: Multiview Video Coding (MVC) is an expansion for stereoscopic applications. Activate this to export MVC files.

Note: MVC is only available in the Plus/Premium versions.

So this clearly states that MVC encoding is available in the platinum version.

I have just noticed there should be 2 MPEG-4 encoders one from Intel and one from Mainconcept. The Help for MVC is for the Minconcept encoder. I wonder if the Mainconcept encoder has been left out of the Trial version. So please could someone who has the purchced version can check that for me.

Hi

. . . . there should be 2 MPEG-4 encoders one from Intel and one from Mainconcept. . . .

This and the MVC codec (if made available - see below) should be available to download/install on purchase of the full version of the program - they are not available in the trial version as they are licensed technology.

The MVC codec used to be available for Movie Edit Pro, I still have it, however it has not worked with Movie Edit Pro, which Movie Studio 18 is, for many years.

Once the Magix rebranding of the 2 programs is complete, and support for importing fully old MVS projects is complete we may have a clearer view of where the product is going in terms of codecs, export format etc.

I purchase a copy of Movie Studio Platinum and I discovered that I had to download and activate the mainconcept MPEG4 encoder by clicking on help and selecting Install extra content. It said it may be a paid for product but it did not ask me to pay extra. The bad news is that I still could not find the MVC option so I have raised a ticket with Magix. In any case the Mainconcept codec should be alot better that the Intel one.

Hi

Good purchase - if you have not used Movie Edit Pro or Video Pro X before then your experience of the workflow, and capabilities of the program may seem strange at first.

@browj2 has published a series of tutorials for Movie Edit pro upon which Movie Studio is based - see this list.

. . . . In any case the Mainconcept codec should be alot better that the Intel one . . . .

There are several of us here who would disagree with that.

Do note that the export presets are already optimised for quality/file size etc and unless you know what you are doing the preset advanced settings should not be touched - a typical tweak which often causes issues is to push the Bitrate slider in the DVD/BD burn process to maximum, this can create unplayable discs.

For 3D/stereo video you can use the side by side option if your TV supports this, though you may have to manually set the TV to the side by side stereo format - I do with mine.

Happy editing

My only reason to use Movie Studio Platinum is the access to an MVC encoder. I use Davinci Resolve Studio for all my editing as it is a far superior product. It is also very good value in that all upgrades are free. I have a copy Vegas Pro which does still have an MVC encoder.

Magix has a habit of withdrawing products without notice e.g. DVD Architect Pro. This does not give me any confidence to purchase Magix products.Infact I purchaced Vegas Movie Studio Platinum only for it to be withdrawn in a few days. Most reputable companies give an end of life date for thier software. They also have the habit of removing features without notice. For instance Vegas Pro 18 no longer can encode Dolby 5.1 audio. I still use a copy of Vegas Pro 13 which has a Dolby Digital Pro encoder.

In the MPEG-4 export window did you tried to change the Stereo 3D settings?

I do not want to export a side by side video. I want to export a Multiview Video Coding (MVC) as per the documentation for the Mainconcept MPEG4 encoder
