How can I transfer a project (.vip) between two users of Music Studio 2013

dpaine wrote on 1/30/2014, 2:59 PM

Hi,

Music Studio 2013, Windows XP 32bit, Pentium 3.2G, 3.5G ram, Lexicon Omega soundcard, EasyDrummer,

I am collaborating with another user of MS 2013 but we cannot get a .vip file to load successfully on his sytem. What project files do I need to pass to him in order for him to be able to load a project successfully.

He is on MS 2013, Windows 7 64bit, different soundcard, and has Superior Drummer.

I have tried passing the .vip and .bak files, but the project fails to open with a '.vip file cannot be opened' message. Are there more project files that need to be present? Or what?

Unable to find any reference to tranferring projects between systems within the help/manuals, so would appreciate any advice

Thanks in advance

Dave

Please tell us what methods you have tried and then we'll go from there

Hi gnarly,

So far literally copying .vip and .bak files to flash drive and opening them on the other system. There's something missing, as MS cannot open the project.

I have just discovered 'Save entire project' under 'Clean-up' on the file menu. This seems to save all the relevant files together once it's pointed to a new folder, so I will give this a go and report on the results.

Thanks for looking at my question.

OK, so I found it, and post this for anyone else having the same issue.

A project can be saved in it's entirety using 'Save Complete Project' under 'Clean Up' on the file menu.

Make sure to create a new folder for the save, and the resulting project folder can be loaded into the Samplitude Projects file on another system and opened as normal (assuming version compatibility etc.)

Thanks

Thanks for getting bac to us with your solution, hopefully it will help others and I have filed it away in my "what if' files

Very helpful, thank you dpaine. I'm still surprised that it's not possible to see where the complete audio data is stored - or select a file location - from the project (or program) properties menu. The normal VIP file for even a large, multi-track project is only a couple of hundred kilobytes, so the audio is clearly not in there!

Hi

. . . . The normal VIP file for even a large, multi-track project is only a couple of hundred kilobytes, so the audio is clearly not in there! . . . .

That is the correct - the VIP file only tells MS what audio files, instruments, synthesizers etc have been used, how they are arranged, edited and what effects etc are applied.

To ensure consistency both computers should be using the same version of MS and any extra effects, plugins etc to ensure that all the instruments, synthesizers etc are available.
