how can I delete single points in an audio track?

rhigh wrote on 11/22/2012, 7:19 AM

I have created a track volume curve in x4 using the mixer.  I now want to adjust it manually. What I hoped would work was to select the curve mouse (9) select a point and press delete but I cannot make this work -- should it?

Better yet would be to select a range of points and delete them all. How should I do this, the manual is not very clear.

thanks in advance from a newbie

OK.  I knew this was possible but had "forgotten" the precise details so had to open a VPX project to check exactly what to do...!

Fundamentally your approach was correct but it is not necessary to select the curve mouse.  I expanded the audio track to full size (using the large X in the bottom right corner of the timeline) so that the track and its points were easier to see.  You then click on the point you wish to delete, making sure it is highlighted (the centre of the "dot" changes from a solid dark to a lighter green) then hit delete.  I have not tried with multiple points but I suspect you can select them by holding Shift as you click each point in turn, then Delete.

Now joy here selecting multiple points, but find that going to 'Effects' tab >> 'Audio effects' >> 'General' gets to the standard keyframe animation curve for volume and it's easy to move along and delete/not delete point by point. (This is in VPX)

Thanks for your help. I was unable to delete a point even after following the instructions you gave, however, I don't think I now need to. Here is what I found (much cursing and failure!!)

1) select the preview audio mouse. (NOT NOT NOT the curve mouse which modifies the clip volume!!)

2) hold the shift down and select the first and last points you want to modify

3) with the shift still held down, drag the selected points to the new position by dragging on any of them.

It is very important to select ALL the points you want to modify, otherwise the drag gets blocked when it encounters an unselected point.

WISH LIST

1) Please make this look like Vegas or Sonar!! much better

2) Please can you implement Mackie-like  control surfaces ( I have a behringer bcf2000).  Perhaps not as comprehensively as Vegas does but at least for audio

If I hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys, when I then click with the arrow cursor each point is deleted.

But this would require MEP/VPX to have much more sophisticated MIDI capability, I think.  I too have a Behringer BCF2000 which I use with a variety of audio editor programs.  It works very well but I suspect if I needed that level of control of the audio  ( and I presume you would also want the automation capabilities of the BCF to be available?) I would open the (?exported) file in an audio editor and work on it there.

For video it would certainly mean implementing track  transparency, that's why I restricted the request to audio.

Page 45 of the x4 pdf manual under tracks refers to audio midi objects and suggests that some functionality already exists but I have not followed this up and cannot see any other references to this.  So I thought that I would fly it!

I used to composite my music in Vegas before it became unacceptably unstable.

Regrettably I think you will find that despite references to MIDI remaining in the manuals, MIDI support has been withdrawn from the current versions of MEP and VPX. The rational being that though MIDI files could be imported onto the timeline and would play during preview, they NEVER rendered during export. This was judged (product management and development) to cause more confusion among users then it was worth.

Workaround of sorts: If you have an older version of MEP I've found that you can add a MIDI file there and then import the entire project into your new project. While a MVP file contains only references to video, images and other audio, a MIDI file (being typically quite small) is incorporated as is into the project file. The initial problem remains however -- you can hear your MIDI during preview but not export it.

Have you considered Magix Samplitude for audio work? It supports a video track though I think it integrates best with VPX

Rather than try to delete points in the track volume curve, you may find it easier to manipulate them in the key frame window.  You can copy, cut and paste points as well as select multiple points.
