I do not have either of the Magix (Movie Studio or Video Pro X), but do have VEGAS Pro (20 Edit currently), and also use GoPro's. Have a 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10 Black. So, with the 9 & 10, yes, pretty much they record in h.265/HEVC.

Your options:

1. Download and install Handbrake . There are numerous tutorial videos on YouTube to watch on its use, though I believe some of the current members of the forum may have tutorials as well (@browj2 @gid), as well as assistance by @johnebaker. Basically "rewrap" to h.264, and you should be able to test out the trial software you acquired. An extra step, yes. More drive space, yes. At least you can try the trial.

2. Download and install the "Free" (a.k.a. Lite) version of DaVinci Resolve. You can natively import the GoPro files into the timeline, and export as well. This is using the h.265 HEVC codec. Though be mindful, if you shoot in the 5K resolution, you can only Export at a max of 4k UHD (and neither in true 4K DCI). Looking at your computer specs, it won't be an easy experience, let alone add the problematic GoPro CODEC everybody hates!

And do heed John EB's comment on the Microsoft HEVC decoder - you need it.

My computer specs are in my signature, and even I will "Transcode" GoPro footage to a user friendly editing CODEC via Shutter Encoder.

@Eduardo-Santos Hi, I've used Magix Movie Studio since 2004, I've also got other editors, Adobe AE, Vegas Pro, Hitfilm Pro, DaVinci Resolve Free, & to be honest MS2023 is one of my favorites for basic editing, it's fast & stable, the timeline is ergonomic, simple drag to crossfade, add transitions & cutting, & exporting is fast, 3x the speed of Vegas 'Pro'. MS would be a good editor to start with if as you say your new to editing,

I upload 4K Videos to Youtube & still use MS to edit those,

I know you want to try the software yourself but If you want or if @mmcswnavy24 wants, you can upload a short GoPro 9 H.265 HEVC 4K or 5K clip by dragging it onto Google Drive, after it's uploaded, right click on it - Share, a window will pop up, at the bottom click Share with anyone who has this link & Copy the link , then paste that link on here using the chain icon at the top of a new comment. & we'll try it for you, 👍

PS the Fee based activation for the HEVC codec John mentioned is only a few £s & is for life, it's a one off payment, I don't know why for such a small fee is not inc in the price of the software.

Hi Eduardo and welcome to the user to user forums.

The reason you may be having difficulty with your video files is your computer specs are not really up to spec for editing 4K material easily. You would have no hardware acceleration and everything would have to be processed via the CPU using the software only. That could cause problems for both playback and exporting. You will be able to process HD material much more easily but still probably without the aid of hardware acceleration.

I don't think there are any new drivers for the nvidia 940m and I think the program can't use your Intel Intel® HD Graphics 5500 chip although @johnebaker would be able to verify that.

It is possible that is also why other programs are having difficulty playing your files on your system.

Certainly there will be lower performance playing back 4K or higher resolution video on the laptop due to a lack of hardware acceleration/CPU cores resulting in stuttering when previewing, additionally export times will be extended.

The HD 520 integrated GPU, not an HD 5500, can provide hardware acceleration supports DirectX 12 - check that the drivers are up to date.

The GeForce 940M does not support NVENC which is needed for hardware acceleration, however it is limited to h.264/AVC encoding, it does not support HEVC/h.265

There are however some options you can make to achieve the best performance ie:

• Use proxy files - the setting is in the Project settings
   
• Turn on the lightning icon bottom right of the preview Monitor it sill be blue when on.
   
• In the program settings, Device options tab set the Import, Processing and Export options to the Intel HD 520.

Do note that some effects such as Brightness/Contrast and others will slow down the playback of the timeline as they are processor intensive due to the CPU having 2 cores / 4 threads.

Interesting to note that cores, etc didn't change much and one would be limited to what could be added in terms of a graphics card. Would it be beneficial for @Eduardo-Santos to re-encode his HEVC files to MP4?

See my signature for the laptop I use - it is as powerful as my PC, however the battery does not last long when exporting a big project, this is common with most laptops, it also has the advantage over many other similar laptops in that Lenovo has a Hybrid mode where both GPU's are available for use by the program.

Strange - I also used Google search and the correct CPU comes up top of the list.

This may be because I select the item to search for in the post, and the search option popups up (Opera), or I right click and select Search.

Possibly my fault.

Looking at my search history I did not add the word 'specs' which I normally do and this time Intel Ark came up on the second page after many reviews and I clicked the first one I saw assuming it would be at the top of the pile.

Speaking of Ark, would shopping for a new machine be worth looking for at something with an Intel Arc graphics card? Assuming that would be better value depending on prices. I'm not sure about 12th gen CPUs as they look like power monsters. I know this is a tricky one to answer and a lot will depend on if Magix continues along this route. To be fair I haven't even looked at the prices of such machines but the components seem to only be going into higher end systems.

Given Magix's comment regarding ARC, I would be looking at how a suitable Intel CPU/iGPU and ARC card compares with a Intel CPU/iGPU and RTX 3070 for HWA, not forgetting of course the Resizable-BAR support.

I think waiting a while is going to be the order of the day as we are still awaiting real world testing.

I decided to buy a new gaming laptop because I cannot do much with the one I have. It is time to change it. I only need few weeks to have the courage to spend a lot of money 😆😆. I am from Brazil and gaming laptops are way expensive here depeding on which spec you choose. Found a Acer Gamer Predator Helios 300 with the following spec:

Well, I think I will be able to do a lot of things with these specs. According to the benchmark results I got it, it looks pretty for the price I found. I compared the RTX 3060 with the RTX 3070, 2080, 2070 and 2080. Compared the i7-11800H with the i7-11850H, 12700H, 12800H and 11600H.

Any opinion to make my decision?
