Hardware Encoding not working?

SomaZ wrote on 6/23/2018, 8:54 AM

I've read a lot about Hardware Encoding and the issues Magix has with it, but in the process I've learned that their professional-grade software (Video Pro X) supposedly solved the issue with NVENC and Nvidia cards and hardware encoding should now work correctly.

So I downloaded the software and am using a Trial Version to test it out. The problem is... Hardware Encoding doesn't seem to work. If I export using H.264 with Hardware Encoding ticked on, the export box shows "(no Hardware Encoding)" and the rendering process goes slowly as expected. I can't even try HEVC to see if that works because that apparently isn't covered by the Trial license.

My question is: what's the problem? I have a GTX 980M which supports NVENC. In fact, I use NVENC in OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) to great success. But not in Video Pro X for some reason? I only have the dedicated graphics card in my system (no integrated graphics).

I'm on version 16.0.1.236. As I understand, that's not the latest version but I have no idea how to update. Does anyone know?

Hi

. . . . I'm on version 16.0.1.236 . . . .

You are missing 2 updates the latest version is 16.0.1. 255.

An educated guess (I do not have any NVidia card installed) would be that you are still using the Default codec setting for Import/Export in the Program settings, Import/export tab.

As I mentioned in my original post, I have no idea how to update. I assume that there must be an option under "Help" but I don't see anything. I also checked out the Import/Export tab in Program settings and it seems to be fine. The "Default" setting was that the first checkbox for Hardware Encoded playback was not enabled. In any case, I have everything enabled. Here's a screenshot of the help menu and the Program Settings:

Hi

Apologies I missed you were using the trial version, the Update on-line option is under Help in the full version and I suspect the lack of NVENC is also because you have the trial version.

However if your processor is an Intel i5 or i7 you should be able to get VPX to use the integrated GPU for acceleration - there is a setting in your NVidia control panel to do this:

  1. Open Nvidia control panel
  2. Select "manage 3D settings
  3. Click on tab "Program settings"
  4. Find "Video Pro X" from dropdown list. If you can't find it in the list, click on the "Add" button on the right and add it.
  5. Choose which graphic card you want to use from dropdown list.
  6. Apply changes

If you do not have an Intel processor with integrated GPU then the trial version runs as is with no HWA

Hi

As far as I can work out from forum feedback - in VPX10 (V16.0.1. 255) the new NVENC (Nvidia encoding) only works with H265 (HEVC) encoding, and possibly only in conjunction with the Main Concept encoder ( which is a separate purchase).
