Getting thrown out of Forum after posting a comment

Recycler wrote on 7/22/2017, 12:08 PM

(Sorry, I know I've seen mentions of this by others but I cannot remember where....)

Every time I make a comment to a post on the Forum I get logged out and find myself back at the Forum home page - and of course all my typing is lost. After I log back in and attempt the same thing again, it works and the post is saved. Even though I now make a copy of my text before attempting to post it, this is very tedious. Any idea how it can be avoided please? (Even the old Forum system, which had its idiosyncrasies, never used to do this.)

Thank you. - Mike -

This just happened to me. I thought I had hit the wrong button, but now that I read your message, I have to confirm the problem. Also, when I tried quoting your message, but then was sent back to the previous page. Kami

This has happened to me too. Exceedingly annoying! Especially as it seems to "strike" quite randomly. (I wonder whether this post will be "lost" as soon as I press Comment?)

I will message the forum admin and ask advice.

And now I have to sign in each time. It's not remembering me, even if I close the page and return 2 minutes later!

Hi Kami

Your browser also has the remember the login information, if you told it not to remember the first time you logged into the forum then you need to reverse the decision, depending on which browser you are using, the method is different.

I'd done that some time ago, and it was working till yesterday, when I got "kicked off" without my post going thru. I just checked through the security and privacy options on Firefox, and magix.com is on Allow wherever I see it, including sign-on/password.

emmrecs wrote on 7/24/2017, 4:08 AM

Yes, this is becoming a real problem.

I have just attempted to post a reply to a question. I checked before I started to write, and whilst I was writing that I was logged in; everything fine. Checked immediately before pressing the Comment button, still shown as logged in, pressed the button, immediately shown as not logged in and post was lost!!!

Not happy!

Hi John.

Yes, it does seem to be very sporadic and random! I have a feeling, subject to necessary additional checking, that for me the problem occurs with my first posting of the day. In the case of the reply I refer to in my above message of today, 10:08, the failed post would have been exactly that and I have a feeling that exactly the same has occurred before today. All subsequent posts today have gone through without problem.

Hi Kami, Jeff

Check that your session cookie is set correctly in your browser - for Firefox click the 3 bar icon top right, Options, Privacy, Remove individual cookies and browse to the Magix section and open it there you should see the following cookie:

Jeff, Under Privacy--> History section, I have Accept cookies from sites --> Exceptions - Cookies, where I enter the website, then select *Allow*. (not Allow for Session.) Also, "Keep until:" - "they expire" is selected.

I looked under "Show Cookies," which shows every cookie for each website. I found the one in your s-shot. It also says Expires at end of session. Is there a way to change this?

(Firefox version 54.0.1)

PLEASE NOTE: This is the second time I'm entering this. When I first hit Comment -- after logging in -- I got a blank page. Good thing I made a copy before hitting Comment.

Hi Kami

. . . . I found the one in your s-shot. It also says Expires at end of session. Is there a way to change this? . . . . .

Cookie cannot have there expiry dates changed, this is set by thee website visited and is what enables you to stay logged in as you browse from page to page in the forum.

As soon as you close the last open browser tab that was logged into the forum or move away from the forum in the last open tab, the browser sees you have ended the session and deletes the session cookie.

For example, you are logged into the forum and want to visit Google to look something up and then return to the forum - if you forget to open a new tab, to use for Google, the session cookie will be deleted. When you return to the forum you will have to log in again if the browser does not have the log in details stored for you.

I work in a different way when I am in the forum I have one tab open with the forum section I am in eg the Video section and answer posts in a separate tab so I never switch from the section page to a topic then back again.

I open a question with a right click and the Open in new tab option, because of the session cookie I am logged in on both tabs and closing just one does not log me out.

Rats, I just lost the post that I made; got logged out and the only thing left in the clipboard was the last sentence below. This has happened several times over the last couple of weeks, particularly with longer posts. I just thought that it was me.

There is definitely some erratic problem somewhere.

Hi John CB

I would suggest you check the session cookie is valid for the next few days and see if you get logged out.

Which browser are you using?

Does it happen with an alternative browser?

Are you, as I detailed above, using multiple tabs/windows while in the forum?

Hi John EB,

The problem is with different machines, desktop, phone, tablet.

As well, trying to check the box to remember me; the box is not visible until logging in, then it is too late. I took to not logging in, trying to reply to a post and getting the full login screen in order to be able to check the box, with varied results.

I will check session cookie.

Yes, I'm afraid now that whenever I write a comment or a PM, before clicking to send it I always try to remember to select all and copy the text. Then, when the post almost inevitably disappears I can open a new comment box and paste the lost text.

Not ideal!

I think that another trick helps. I open second tab to the forum and log in. This seems to keep the first one logged in or logs it in. Between the two, copying before and a second log in, I have not lost a message for quite a while - only when I forget. It's still annoying.
