Gamma: Lows, Mids, Highs, How to apply and save each individually?

ChiefGeek wrote on 7/8/2016, 7:07 PM

Hello,

Yes, I'm a newb.  But I'm studying hard on this subject of editing video, and am wondering...

1.  What exactly is Gamma, and why is there a drop down box for low, mid, and high?  Is the Gamma just a general adjustment, and low, mid and high more specific for bring out the light and darkness of the individual ranges?  Can each be applied separately?

Thank you in advance from Music CIty, USA, Nashville, TN!  :)

Hi and welcome to the Magix Community,

Here is the technical answer straight from the VPX manual:

Gamma: "Gamma" determines the mean gray value that can be calculated from the various color ranges. In the preset list, select various areas to edit only the dark, median, or brightest areas of the image.
Using the fader, you can also set the level of brightening or darkening.

HDR Gamma: Unlike "Gamma", very dark areas are selectively lightened.

HDR Blur: This changes the transition between light and dark areas together with "HDR Gamma".

I was putting together a tutorial on the brightness, contrast, and gamma features to show on the measuring instruments just what they do. The best way is to try out a photo or video that has dark and light areas and play with the sliders to see how they work. I often have to increase the gamma lows and the HDR gamma to get what I am looking for.

Enjoy!

What is the vpx manual? Probably a dumb question I know.

Hi,

Magix Video Pro X (VPX),  one step up from MEP (Movie Edit Pro)

The same information is in the MEP 2016 manual on page 137. Open the help file and do a search for gamma.

As a new user, you should watch this tutorial on Getting Started in MEP to make sure that you have downloaded everything.
