Hello all you AVIers out there. Over many months, ever since MMS 2023 (and possibly 2022, can't remember) came out, I have found that the program doesn't interpret AVIs that don't have ratio information stored in them. These are files from analogue captures or processing in codecs such as HuffYUV, Lagarith or MagicYUV.
I think I have finally coalesced the issue.
What I have found:
-When importing an analogue AVI, MMS 2023 appears to simply divide the width by the height, and assume the answer is the actual ratio eg 720/576
-When the file is opened on the timeline, it is squashed into 5:4 (with extended black pillarbox bars on the sides), instead of it's correct ratio of 4:3
-The video object properties of the file correctly show 4:3.
-Changing the object size in SPR to 768x576 (untick "combine") makes the file display correctly
-Section cannot be used after that SPR change because the objects immediately jumps back to 5:4.
-The only way a section effect can be applied is by setting the size as above (768x576), then re-combining the sizes, then dragging out the SPR box (in 75% monitor view). This is a major nuisance and slows down the workflow considerably.
-MEP 2021 exhibited none of the above; a 720x576 file was imported and displayed as 4:3 and could be manipulated with Section with no issues. It appears MEP 2021 (and earlier) had been programmed to interpret an AVI as 4:3, despite there being no ration info in the file data. The only "problem" with MEP 2021 was when exporting, the default ratio was 5:4.
Could I have your thoughts/confirmation that this is a program issue. If it is, I'll submit a bug report.
Thanks, Al
