Flickering / Judder after burning to DVD

markb2908 wrote on 12/15/2014, 10:17 AM

Hi there.

I'm making a movie that inlcudes some sports footage along with with some music. I have slowed all of the footage down to 1/2 speed (0.5). When I play back on my PC everything is perfect, but when I burn it to DVD and play it back through my Bluray player some of the footage is quite juddery.

I am using Movie Edit Pro 15. Is there anything I can do to reduce this or eliminate it completely ?

Hi

. . . . Movie Edit Pro 15 . . .

Do you mean Movie Edit Pro 15 or Movie Edit Pro 2015.  If you mean 2015 please use this so as to avoid confusion with version 15 is still around being used my some members.

Did you turn on Interpolate  intermediate images in the Speed control options?

  this is from MEP 2015.

Hi Mark

From PM:-

. . . . Thank you for responding to my original post.

The software I am using is MEP 2015.

I tried what you suggested and it helped a little but the video quality / playback is still much smoother when I watch the movie on PC compare with TV/DVD.

The frame rate of the original source material appears to be 29.97 (i got this from clicking on a video clip and looking at the object properties). I live in the UK so my TV format is PAL rather than NTSC.

I'm not sure what other info would be useful (this is my first project so I'm a very new at this). Is there anything else, or are there any other setting that I could adjust in order improve the 'smoothness' of the playback ? any help is greatly appreciated. . . .

The issue you are seeing is a result of a combination of at least 1 and 2, if not all 3, of the following :-

  1. 'Pulldown' where the 29.97 fps is converted to 25 fps - in simple terms frames are dropped in a specific sequence.

  2. Add in the slow motion ( 0.5 speed) will exaggerate the jumpiness.

  3. Conversion from Progressive to Interlaced video - if this is being done - adds even more to the problem.

This is just about the worst case scenario you can have for getting smooth playback.

I had this problem mixing Progressive NTSC 30fps (sportscam) and Interleaved PAL 25fps (HandyCam).

After a lot of experimenting with different settings, other software converters and de-interlacers (reasonably priced ones) I found there is very little you can do to improve things with this combination of 'issues'.

The Pulldown conversion always gives rise to some jerkiness on shots, especially where there is panning or movement across the screen.

I had the same problem with MEP 2016, but I found what worked for my situation. My video was shot in HD @60 fps P but since the DVD is at a different setting I change the MOVIE SETTING to 29.97 fps, then I burned the DVD. That worked for me. I hope this helps.

Hi

I would try creating the project and burning the disc in the same format (or as close to ) as the original footage ie. NTSC 29.97fps. The bluray player should be able to play it and the TV should be able to display it at the NTSC frame rate if it is a modern flat panel. You could also check you TV'S advanced settings as they often have smootheners that create frames to smooth out non standard frame rates.

Hi

@ robert-eppolito

Please do not re-open old posts such as this one which is 2 years old.

To comment on your statement:

. . . . My video was shot in HD @60 fps P but since the DVD is at a different setting I change the MOVIE SETTING to 29.97 fps . . . . .

In this case the resulting video will be better than the OP's situation - you are halving the framerate by an even number which means the 'dropped frames' will be more regular.

The issue becomes very noticeable when changing from 30 fps down to 25 fps - there is no even multiple in the frame rate differences.
