(FIXED) Upgraded from MM 2022 Prem to 2023 Prem. Slow Response

willshoe wrote on 11/26/2022, 5:50 PM

Upgraded from 2022 (2022 version was working fine) to 2023 and now slow to unresponsive for minutes at a time per click making it useless in addition to Store sync taking forever.

The following Troubleshooting was applied with no change in behavior:

  • reverted back to Windows 11 Video Drivers for GTX 1070 going back 2 years.
  • Installed Nvidia Studio and Game editions of drivers going back to August 2022.
  • Installed Latest Nvidia Drivers Game edition 31.0.15.2698 11/13/2022.
  • Changed Video setting to Max Performance and Power Plan as well.
  • SFCSCAN... all good no errors found.
  • Updated Windows 11 to latest version.
  • Run Magix MM 2023 in administrator mode during the entire process multiple times.
  • Disabled all background processes including OneDrive
  • Factory reset MM 2023 and Store sync cache as well (when I could finally get in)
  • Changed to other audio gear creative USB, onboard audio, FireStudio, HDMI, Bluetooth, etc.
  • Internet Speeds tested 1gig down, 50mb up

What's Changed for the worse?

  • Went Back and Installed MM 2022 Prem. It is now having the same exact issues as MM 2023 Prem when it was working fine before I upgraded.

What is working for now?

  • Went further back and installed 2021 Music_Maker_30.0.3.39_INT_210927_16-17_82878DA2, which is now working fine so far.
  • Checked all Other Magix Software installations on system all working fine. Video Studio Pro X, Movid Edit Pro 2018, Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab 4 (got it today), Magix Samplitude Music Studio, and Acid Music Studio 11.
  • Other Non Magix Music Software also working fine: FL Studio 20 Signature Bundle Latest Version, Reason 12 latest version, Reason Suite 11, MPC Beats, Plus all other VST's playing nice with all music applications.

Other test in process:

Installed Latest MM 2023 on a totally different desktop running Windows 10 latest updates with an Intel I 7 Processor, 32gig DDR 4, M.2 NVME SSD, GTX 1060 Latest Drivers, and having the same slow unresponsive issues as well. Further test is being done and will post update later. May just do a clean install granted only a couple of games installed and MM 2023. Been at this for 6 hrs so far, getting a bit tired :)

Any suggestions would be appreciated on what else to try but from my point of view there is some strange code behavior in 2022 and 2023. I may Try 2022 MM on the Windows 10 machine later as well. will update when I find more but hopefully there is a fix or patch just waiting to be installed... wishful thinking 😁

@willshoe Maybe try to install all pending Windows updates. Also try a tool like Snappy Driver Installer to easily update all your drivers.

It appears rarely and Magix support doesn't have a way to reliable reproduce this problem. It usually helps by running Music Maker as administrator (but they seem to be not sure why this helps because it shouldn't have any impact on the programs GUI performance).

Support also found out, that this problem can be caused by other programs running parallel to Music Maker. In one case it was caused by a screenreader.

You might want to try a complete reinstallation of Windows on one of your computers. It's my stategy if I encounter inexplicable problems. Windows sometimes just breaks itself with its forced updates, especially major updates.

Hold SHIFT while restarting your computer and Windows will offer a menu where you can select to reinstall it from scratch. But I'm not sure if you want to do this for just one program.

Update:

Have tried the following versions with the same issues on now 4 computers in the house (was going to buy more copies for wife and daughter while on sale but holding off now) and also tried running them in safe mode as well. The only one that works thus far is Music_Maker_30.0.3.39_INT_210927_16-17_82878DA2:

  • Music_Maker_30.0.4.44_INT_211210_10-33_68B45BD3_30_0_4_44
  • Music_Maker_30.0.6.53_INT_220505_18-17_2AB895FA_30_0_6_53
  • Music_Maker_31.0.2.15_INT_221024_16-47_F930A291_31_0_2_15
  • plus updated to latest version thru MM update took 10 min of waiting just to click on update)

updated computer specs:

  • OS: 2 windows 11 Pro, 1 Windows 11 Home, 1 Windows 10 Pro (ALL with latest MS Updates and Drivers)
  • Video Cards: 2 running GTX 1060, 1 GTX 1070, 1 RTX 3060 12G
  • Drives: All running on m.2 NVME Drives SSD
  • CPU'S: 2700x, 5600x, 5950X, Intel I7
  • Ram: 3 systems with 32gig and 1 system with 64gig

Background applications on original computer reported were manually removed, no antivirus, firewalls disabled, VST Plugins all removed. Screen readers, magnifiers, etc. were already disabled. Even installed all latest C++ VC distributable. Note that this same issue was reported back when mm 2016 came out and I remember having to delete a file that managed to get it to work back then but can't remember which one it was but had something to do with the Online Store.

The only thing common is all video cards are Nvidia (3 MSI, 1 EVGA) and was reported in the past that NVIDIA was the culprit in some way. This is an issue that still haunts the MM line thru the years and keeps popping its ugly head back up. I have tried everything I can think of but don't want to go around reinstalling 4 computers to maybe get this program working again, especially on my main working computer That I video edit and audio produce on. If a previous version of MM still works fine on all machines, then something changed on Magix end again (Same issue in 2016 returned)

Also note that MM 2022 WAS STILL WORKING until I upgraded to 2023 and now can't go back and install 2022 as it now has the same issue unless there is a specific version of 2022 that may still work but don't have access to all other versions to try. (Just wish Magix had a real download section that list all versions that I could download and try.

All other Video and Audio editing software previously mentioned are still working fine including the newest install of audio cleaning Lab.

This is a tough one to figure out because we have the same issue in both Windows 10 and 11. I can only assume that maybe a particular update from MS for both versions is related.

I will put in an official ticket today and hold off on more purchases but will miss out on the sales most likely as I don't expect this issue to be resolved quickly. My wife really wanted this but maybe get them FL Studio or Reason instead for XMAS as I never had problems with them over the past 15 years or more of this magnitude. Music Maker always had growing pains going back to the 1990's (yes been using Magix products for that long)

Yes, this was the last version before Magix changed something. Version 30.0.4.44 introduced this bug. Support said they solved this bug with the following patch. But that is not true for every user. I believe it had something to do with the Qt framework. They changed it to a newer version. But I'm not 100% sure if I'm remembering that correctly.

Note that this same issue was reported back when mm 2016 came out and I remember having to delete a file that managed to get it to work back then but can't remember which one it was but had something to do with the Online Store.

Have you tried to disable Internet on a computer? Does it make a difference?

willshoe wrote on 11/29/2022, 4:30 AM

Does not make a difference, thought of that earlier.

FIXED: Disabled Text Cursor in Windows 11 which is default ON. That did the trick.
